    Default Child tax credits..

I've just had a baby, as some of you know and need to start claiming tax credits. My husband gets working tax credits as he's employed 39 hours per week, I rang them up to inform them that we'd had a baby and all the guy did was take my son's name and date of birth. He didn't say he'd send a form or anything for child tax credits, do I need to do that seperately? Is it a seperate application? Or do they just take it into account and re-calculate our award?

Also I still have to claim child benefit but we need to get the birth certificate first and we have an appointment to register him tomorrow. But because he wasn't born in this county, we have to wait for the birth certificate to be posted. So does that mean we have to wait to receive child benefit before we can apply for child tax credits?

If I have been helpful in any way, please tip my scales

Yes and yes, and by the way, congratualtions!!!!

If there is an existing Tax Credit claim they just add the child to the claim and recalculate. You don't have to be receiving child benefit to qualify for tax credits. They do usually ask for your child benefit number on a new claim form - this is simply to ensure that you are responsible for the child, if there is any dispute about responsibility. If they have reason to doubt you then they will cross reference it. If they cannot find CB in payment they will ask you for proof, but again this is only if there is any doubt over who is responsible for the child.

I've only been asked for my child benefit number when they investigated my Tax Credits claim.

You should receive a new award notice in the next 14 days or so.

Thank you - but I'm still a little confused - sorry, placenta brain lol. Do I have to ring up and request a new claim form or will they send me one or do I just wait?

you can do it online - I do mine that way

I am a layperson and have no legal training but I do have an iota of common sense (sometimes)

Welcome Finance PPI -----> over £3k court case filed SETTLED

Park Motor Finance -----> incorrectly logged default on credit file claim for compensation

Lloyds Tsb ----> plenty of things all filed with Financial Ombudsman or Small Claims ----> settled by paying me full amount sought 02/05/09

Easy Jet ----> damaged pushchair offered £232.50 pursued claim awarded £465

Black Horse ----> Outstanding balance of £574.00 made up of charges and interest ----> account closed after accepting F&F settlement of £100.

<--------- If I have helped please tip my scales (bet thats the only time you'll hear a woman say that )

No you don't have to complete a new claim form for tax credit, they will recalculate it on your change of circumstances and issue you a new award notice.

The only time you reclaim is when you become a lone parent or begin living with a partner.

Have you completed your annual renewal pack? You can do that over the phone if you haven't already done it

Thanks, yes completed that about 2 weeks ago and returned it. Thanks for your help Is it likely that working tax credits could go down to allow for the child tax credits to be applied?

No. Working tax credit will not be affected. Child tax credit will increase and you will also receive the baby element
