    Default Natwest bank charges

    Hello!

    I am new to the Forum and just spent an hour reading, now my head is buzzing and I'm even more confused than to start with.

    I apologise if something like this has been asked before, but couldn't find anything that was quite the same as the situation I am in.

    So, what happened was this:

    I had a Step account with Natwesticon. I get Carer's Allowance for looking after my disabled stepson, which got paid into that account.

    A few days before the May payment I checked my bank account and saw that 4 direct debits (all no more than 5 £ each) had not been paid, because another d/d had been taken out early. I got charged 38 £ for each of the unpaid direct debits, amounting to a total of 152 £. Then another fee was added to my account, I don't even know what for, bringing the total fees to 172 £ over 4 days.

    That happened on a Thursday. I immidiately called the DWP to stop or redirect my Carer's Allowance, but they said it was already sent and there was nothing they could do.

    On Friday the money was put into my account and the bank took the full charges, leaving me with just about 40£ for the rest of the month.

    I tried to talk to the people in the bank but they couldn't do anything. They told me to talk to the people in the 'lending centre' and I was told that there was nothing they could do because it was all automated and the charges were added, and it's all my fault anyway.

    I ended up closing the account, but was still stuck without money for nearly the full month of may. I have no other income than my Carer's Allowance.

    Can Natwest really just take my full benefit for a month to cover the charges, and leave me with no money? Is there any way I can reclaim those charges even though I closed my account with them? I know I should probably not have done that, but I was just so angry at that moment.....

    Now, do I have any chance of getting something back from them, or have I messed it up for myself?

    Any comments/advice/tips would be appreciated.

    Edit it a bit to suit your siuation and send it by recorded delivery.

    I would add that this was benefit money paid in and that you are facing financial hardship because of thier actions.

    being the beliggerent sod that I am, I would also contact the company that took the DD early and complain.

    If you have had more charges from Natwesticon than the recent ones and you don't have the statments showing this, you will need to do a SARicon but we'll deal with that later.
