    Default income support query

Hi everyone, just a quick query on income support,if anyone can help i would appreciate it.
I applied for IS on 28 may. I had a compliance officer visit 2 weeks ago, (he didn't think i would have any problems with my application) it has now gone or in the process of going to a decision maker. My question is how long approx until i can get a decision? I have, of course asked the question myself directly to them, they just say as soon as a decision has been made that they will contact me. I don't want to be a pain and keep hounding them, but i am living off loans from family and friends at the moment.

    Thanks in advance

It's impossible to say. At the moment with the recession in full swing there are a lot more claims to benefit being made than ever before. If they are unable to say, we're unable to say as we don't have access to their caseloads. There of course, will be clearance targets (a period of time a claim should be decided by) however what the clearance time is on paper and what it is in reality are two different things.

You can telephone the enquiry line to check the progress of your claim, and enquire if they need any further information. You can ask during this call if they are able to estimate how long it will likely be, however the staff on the enquiry line won't have access to the caseload either so you may get the same answer as I have given. Ask what the expected clearance time is. If they say there isn't one, it's bull, there has to be in accordance with government policy. If your claim isn't cleared within the time scale and you have provided all of the information you have asked for you are well within your rights to complain. I don't know what the clearance time is for income support, although I do know the UK and Northern Ireland sometimes have different clearance times, and they don't tend to make it public knowledge but if you ask, they should tell you.

My advice is based on my opinion, my experience and my education. I do not profess to be an expert in any given field. If requested, I will provide a link where possible to relevant legislation or guidance, so that advice provided can be confirmed and I do encourage others to follow those links for their own peace of mind. Sometimes my advice is not what people necesserily want to hear, but I will advise on facts as I know them - although it may not be what a person wants to hear it helps to know where you stand. Advice on the internet should never be a substitute for advice from your own legal professional with full knowledge of your individual case.

Please do not seek, offer or produce advice on a consumer issue via private message; it is against forum rules to advise via private message, therefore pm's requesting private advice will not receive a response.
