Hi I am hoping someone will be able to advise me on the best way to proceed with my situation. I took out a new style student load in 2003, graduated in 2006 and then left the country. I have never had any contact with the Student loans company and have never made a payment. I am now due to return to the UK and was hoping someone could let me know the best route to go down for dealing with the Student loans company and paying off the loan. I know its my fault for not having kept in touch with them but I am now very worried about late payment fines and if the debt has been passed onto debt collectors. Can anyone advise me as to what my next step should be? Thanks in advance.
Have the loan company contacted you at all in the last 3 years?
What were the terms for re-paying the loan? Was there a time limit after graduation in which you had to either pay of the balance of the loan or arrange payments?
Thanks for the prompt response. I have not had any contact with the loans company at all, because they have had no way to contact me. As to the terms of the loan, I am not sure. As far as I know it is a standard student loan over a period of 3 years and I was due to start making payments a year after graduation. I do not have any of the original paper work, foolish of me I know. So my guess is that the terms of the loan are the standard terms for new style loan. Thanks again for replying so quickly.
The date for returning to the UK is approaching fast and I am getting increasingly worried about my situation. I am thinking that I should phone the Student Loans Company and ask about the status of my loans, or perhaps seeking legal advice before I do that would be a better idea. If anyone has had a similar experience please can you advise as to the best way forward. Should I try an SAR to get all the info they have on my account..? Please help.
Never phone the student loans company. In my experience they are as shifty and devious as the worst of the debt collection industry. Only communicate in writing with them. I doubt anything will happen very quickly with them so you will have some time to pull together an action plan.
