bought an advent laptop dec 2006 from pc world, so its 2 yrs old this xmas
the motherboard has now gone, so the laptop isnt working at all
i can prove there was no misuse as pc world might try and use this
but have also read on the reciept that if i prove there was no missuse i could either get my money back or a replacement
is this right
i heard that by the EU law it should stand
The issue with the EU law is a bit of a red herring - it gives you no more protection than the Sale of Goods Act would otherwise do and has already been implemented in the latest amendment to it.
So it's as SOGA says - if the product hasn't failed due to misuse or wear and tear, in other words it was a fault which existed when you purchased the item (but may not have been showing then) and the item hasn't lasted as long as expected, you are entitled to a free repair or replacement (not initially a refund) provided that you can prove this. As the item is over six months old you need to prove the fault - most retailers ask you to provide a report from a qualified engineer describing the nature of the fault to be entitled to anything, if they are going to contest it.
Surely Dec 2006 is 2 1/2 yrs old though - it's 2009. I'd not really expect a cheap laptop to last much more than 3 years.

Thanks for replying to my question
im sorry but i meant i purchased it for £500 in dec 2007 so its 1 1/2 yrs old
ive had to replace the charger and a new screen too, so im not happy with the advent make
im going to try and argue my case with PC world
ive got someone to back me up with the fault occurring from non missuse
so we will see, but any tips or words of advice would be useful
many thanks again
Mine's a similar age (Feb 08) and has been totally fine, not a scratch. It depends what chassis it is - and more importantly, how well you look after it. Screen + m/b + charger does seem a lot - in fact, the laptop isn't really much more! What's the actual fault with the MB?

im not sure what the mother board fault is, all i was told by the repair work shop was that the motherboard needs replacing
i use the laptop after work in the evenings, theres no missuse at all
so im a bit peed off as i spent £130 on a new screen and then a new charger
a sort of fire-fighting role here. Hate HFC & their past compulsory PPI ethos

Re: advent laptop motherboard gone
so what happened to the PSU & THE screen why did you have to pay for that before?
your situation is diff to argue, the only way i can see you getting this free under SOGA is by using the 'unfit for purpose' clause, but that has to be a fault that has already been agreed as a build fault by the manu.
you might like to do some digging & see how many others have gone faulty for this error and if the manu owns up to it.
good luck

...its 1 1/2 yrs old
ive had to replace the charger and a new screen too, ...
On what date did you replace the charger and installed a new screen? Do you have valid proof of the repairs? Did you inform PC World about the faults then?
If the carger replacement and repair is within 12 months of purchasing the product, you may have legal remedy. I may be wrong, seek further opinion.
Thank you for helping me
i replaced the charger around xmas time via the internet, and the screen was replaced 8 months ago, i have the reciept for that repair
i didnt tell PC world as i didnt know where i stood to be honest.
i am getting a report from the pc company who diagnosed the motherboard failure, just to say there was no missuse
do you know if i could fight for the screen replacement costs?
The screen was replaced about 8 months ago could be longer i will check the reciept, the screen just went black, all the function was there but there was nothing on the screen, so i got the screen replaced
the charger was replaced xmax 2008.
I thought that paying a little bit over the odds for a laptop, would be a safe option but wasnt sure about what make to go for,
Q i want a laptop that is good just for surfing the net, uploading pics, just normal use really, any suggestions?? as i havent got a clue, someone mentioned Dell being a good make
i had a fujitsu siemen laptop before it cost me around £500 but that lasted 5 years, the hard drive went,as well as all my memories
Q would i be able to get the data from a broken hard drive as ive been told i cant
i have so many videos and pics on that laptop, im so annoyed that i never put them on a disc
The laptop that was diagnosed with a motherboard problem is now fixed
it took 5 minutes for my boyfriend who isnt a computer expert but has got enough patience to fix it
there was a sleep switch, switched on, that was stopping the laptop from working
i cant believe it
i had to wait over a week until I called the computer repair shop as they must have forgotton me, to remind them my laptop was needing repair, then they charged me £25 just for looking at it and telling me the motherboard needs replacing, they also gave me back the wrong charger, which ive mentioned to the repair shop, but they are saying i have the right one
but the charger i have keeps falling out of my laptop, so it cant be
so im going straight back to the repair shop 2morro.
thank you all for your time

What, the actual pin in the socket itself? If that is loose (as opposed to the actual charger plug) then that will need re-soldering.

i have been given the wrong charger back from the pc repair shop. the charger is loose and keeps falling out, the actual pin in the pc that it connects to is fine
Also when theres a motherboard problem does that affect the pc start up the mother board fault wasnt explained to me,i thought id fixed it as i got the pc working but having looked into it a bit more on line i see that the motherboard faults can be the starting up of the pc
is there anyway to fix this

OK, so that sounds like a wrong charger. Just checking it wasnt something else as the symptoms can sometimes be the same.

Thank you forestchav and DX100uk
but on the same subject
what are the symptons of a fautly motherboard?
as i got my pc to start up and perform, then when i shut down the pc and tried to restart it, it wouldnt start up,
is this the symptom of a faulty motherboard?
Also
another question,
my old laptop fijitsu siemens died on me a short while ago, i had it for about 4 yrs, the hard drive has gone, i really want to get all my data off the hard drive, is there any way of doing this?
i have lots of pictures and other stuff on that pc that i would like to transfer to my new pc
It can be, yes - if it's persistently not starting up (and you know there is charge in the battery) you should really be letting PC World as the retailer deal with it.
As for your other question, you can sometimes recover data off a failed hard drive yourself just by plugging it into another machine, and you can get USB adapters for this (I have one and it works well, quite useful) but if the drive's actually failed seriously it might need to be taken to a professional who specialises in data retrieval. If that's the case, then it can be costly depending on what the problem is so that depends on the data you have. (I often find the best thing to do is to presume HDs will fail - or something else - and keep regular backups)

im sorry to ask all these questions as you have been so helpful
i will be saving all my photos and info on a disc in the future
i have so many memories on the old laptop, i just hope i havent lost them forever
