I am a student who lives with 3 others in a house owned by a landlord but run by the university.
Ill call myself R. The others who live here are A, B and L.

Myself and L moved in with A and B in sept 2008, A and B and another tennant lived here during sept 07 to August 08, the other tennant, M, moved out in August 08 but A and B still live here.

B is now moving out this summer and myself and L are going home for the holidaysicon but A wants to live here during the hols. She contacted Scottish Power who supply out electricity and gas to say that she needed the bills lowered because it would just be her during the hols.

Scottish power contacted her saying that we in the house owe them £600 in unpaid bills because they underestimated the amount we would use for gas and electric. They were told that there was 3 tennants in the early part of 08 but that there would be 4 tennants in 09.

They had made no mention of this huge amount of money we apparently owe before.
The last time someone took an electric meter reading was in jan 09 but there has been no readings for the gas meter since june 08.
The gas meter is situated in a bedroom in the house which is usually locked (we have no key)
Scottish Power say we owe £200 in electric bills and £400 in gas bills.

How on earth is this possible? We havent used the heating in 2 months because of the heat. Scottish Power have not said from when the bills are from, I need to know if we have to pay these huge bills as we do not have much money, barely enough for food and bills as it is at the moment.

Scottish Power made no mention of the owed bills in any of the paper bills sent in the post, why are they suddenly telling us now. Myself and L have only been here since sept 08 and one of the previous tennants, M, who stayed in the house during the summer of 08 cannot be contacted to pay any of the bills.

Any help would be appreciated
