    Default Council tax

    Hi everyone,

    My first time on here.

Basically what happened was that I moved out of a property 3 months prior to my contract with the landlord finished. This was done under verbal agreement with the landlord at the time and was more than two years ago.

In the meantime, the council has now contacted me in my new home and said I am liable for this bill. I have explained several times that I should not be liable for the bill as I was not at the property at the time and I was not the only occupant. But as my name was on the bill they said I was liable. So I finally came to an agreement to pay the bill.

have now been paying back the council at £50 a week (I have made two payments so far) and will be calling the council tomorrow. I have done everything via letters previously as I wanted to have a record of all that was said. I have been advised to rather call the council but it is difficult as I am temping and working as many hours as I can in order to make the money for this to be settled.

Is there any chance they can call off the baliff.

It has made my life a living hell and I have got so low I have even contemplated suicide because I cannot deal with it. I don't want to go to jail. I am a good person and I want to be able to pay off my debts but cannot find a permanent job.

It is affecting all my other creditors as I am not paying them and have them hounding me. My phone does not stop ringing and everynight when I get home I have demand letters.

I don't know what else to do.

I had the payments come out of my account two months in a row. In the third month (a couple of weeks before Christmas) I lost my job and have been temping in various jobs since (still looking for permanent work nearly 6 months on).

At the time I did write to the countil stating that I had lost my job and to please re-consider a more affordable payment plan. I heard nothing back and then wrote again. In response to this the council sent me a form to fill in my statement of earnings which I did do along with a current pay slip.

It is not easy to know what I earn a month as I work on an hourly rate. I don't get paid for bank holidaysicon and if I am ill. They did not repond to me other than an evelope containing the pay slip I sent them.

Next thing I had a bailifficon's notice. I called them and tried to reason with them and offered the same payment I offered the council and they were not interested and said if I do not pay they will pass it back to the council and I will go to jail.

I told them that I live in a rented property that is fully furnished. I have nothing but the clothes on my back and a few personal items - books, photo albums, etc. I can prove this with the tenancy agreement I have with my current landlord. But I do not want to let them into my house to show them that.
