Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
I am currently unemployed and have been for over a year.
I owed the bank some charges while being unemployed and I missed one payment by £4 and for the month they have charged me £215 for interest and unplanned overdraft, I cannot afford this as I have to pay for food and other things to live.
I was planning to phone the citizens advice to see what I can do but the bank keep applying charges to me, I missed another payment before and they wacked the charges up I was £200+ left and then after the last charges and these ones I am up to £700+ for interest and unplanned overdraft. Is this even legal?
As I am writing this I really cannot sleep because I was so close to paying off the debt and then they set me back again. Even if they give me a planned overdraft that means I still owe them money which all of it is made from interest and unplanned overdrafts.
a sort of fire-fighting role here. Hate HFC & their past compulsory PPI ethos

Re: Unemployed with interest and unplanned overdrafts
yep i hate Lloyds too , just going through the same.
what annoys me more is their customer service people just don't listen & will nothing to help.
Lloyds , you need to get your act together, there is little point in giving 'helpful' advice, like phone this number to discuss if you are having trouble paying XYZ when actually all you put up is a brickwall.
mine was for £9.14 over a £200 O/D limit, resulted in £184 in charges and interst in one month.
bah!

Any help please?
Are you on benefits and if so have you thought about sending them a letter of appropriattion?
If you read around the forum a while you will soon realise that the charges are unlawfully high and will very probably be returned to you.
You certainly will have to start taking action now because Lloyds will just keep on charging you and will lead you into an uncontrolable catastrophe of debt, debt collectors, damaged credit file etc.
I'm not sure that the CAB will offer very much in the way of advice as to seriouls positive action to take.
I'm afraid that you will need to be very assertive to stand a chance of sorting this out.
Do go to the CAB - you never know but probably the best thing is to keep on posting here and to act on the advice you get here.

Re: Unemployed with interest and unplanned overdrafts
I'm afraid that you will have to look rather harder on the forum then.
They will charge you whenever they want. If you haven't got much money, then they will charge you even harder because you are more of a cash cow to them.
The only thing you can do if you are on benefits is to prevent them from actually deducting the charges by sending them a letter of appropriation . have a look at our library and you will find one.
Even when you send them a letter of appropriation, it may take some while to respond or to understand it. Also, I understand that you may need to send a letter of appropriation just before each time benefits put into your account. If you miss the date then they will take the money.
You say that getting a planned overdraft is an option. If you are on benefits then I'm afraid that I very much doubt that it is an option. They only really give planned overdraft to people who don't need them very badly.
I suggest that you spend a good few days reading around the forum so that you start to understand the mentality of the banks, and what you can do about it to protect yourself. If you don't take the effort to understand all then believe me, they will dominate you and you will not escape.
Start understanding how you can claim all of your charges back which you have ever received since 1995 -- if your account history goes back that long

Re: Unemployed with interest and unplanned overdrafts
Ok many thanks, I do have a planned overdraft with them as I couldn't offord to pay off the charges in one go, which wsa £20 a month, missed the payment by £4 and then they charge me £215+.
They didn't even send me a letter saying I missed the payment. I recieved one last time to which I quickly ptut a planned overdraft again (increased) to cover the charges.
In my mind this seems illegal as they are charging you without you knowing about it and giving me an unplanned overdraft and only informing me once they made all the charges
Re: Unemployed with interest and unplanned overdrafts
You are quite right in every particular. But that is how they make their money.
Once they think that they have racked up enough debt from you and that you are no longer much use to them, they will close your account and sell you on - as well as defaulting you on your credit file.
The you will go through the process of being hounded, telephoned, threatened, insulted. You will become angry frustrated depressed worried helpless desparate.
Just you wait and see. It is already starting.
And it is all about money which actually belongs to you.
