Some of this is relevant to you:-

get ready for a battle because Curry's don't seem to understand their customers' consumer rights and will try to rely on the fact that the guarantee has expired.

Here is the best thing to do:

Put it in for repair. Don't let on that you are interested in doing anything other than paying for the repair.
They will give you an estimate for repairs first of all. You may have to pay for this. You will get the payment back.
I am quite sure that the estimate will be very costly. Whatever, get their own evaluation and estimate on paper and then refuse the repair and ask for the return of the unit.
The important thing here is that you will now have in your possession their own assessment of the problem and their own valuation. they will not be able to dispute this later.

Once you have this evidence, write to them formally and demand that the machine is repaired at their cost as no one would say that a laptop was satisfactory quality if it has a serious Breakdownicon 18 months later. (Can you imagine Curry's or HP advertising their laptops "will last you at least 18 months"? They would never sell any.

Currys will say no. You then send them an lbaicon - 7 days. Then send them the good newsicon.
Once they receive the court claim from you they will start to take you a little more seriously. Come back here and we'll help you over your next steps.
Your Consumer Rights in NI are just the same as here although county courticon procedure is a little different. Visit the NI courts site for info.
