Default Abbey are trying to do me over :(

I'm not sure if this comes under 'reclamation of bank charges' rather than trying to avoid them.
Basically I had a visa electron account with Abbeyicon which i no longer use as they refused to give me an overdrafticon... i had a number of direct debits set up on this account which i cancelled online when i opened up a new account with another bank.
On receiving my statement from Abbey i noticed they had charged me for 2 unpaid direct debits, at around £30 each time.. Anyway i ignored this as i felt it unfair that they would charge me after i apparently cancelled them.. i know ignoring the situation is silly but i didn't learn........

Anyway its been a few months of ignoring them now and i now apparently owe them around £170 of what is purely bank charges.. i'm too afraid to call them and try and sort it out as i don't know what to say

Any advice on this? Please reply asap as i only have a week to respond or they are calling out the bailiffsicon on me.

    Heeeelp... please?

    Welcome to the site.
Baliffs can only act on Court Orders so you wont be seeing those on these issues anyway.
You need to put something in writing to them.
If you are prepared to take them on in Court-then send them a letter asking for the charges back-or else to provide you with evidence that the charges are not unfair in that it costs them 30 quid for your breaches.
They are probably maintaining that you did not give enough cancellation notice for the DDs.
I suggest that you start a thread in the Abbeyicon bank forum and read up a little.
If you need further help then feel free to ask.

If you are sent a private message directing you for advice or support with your issues to another website, this is your choice. Before you decide, consider the users here who have already offered help and support.Private message facilities are offered for users to communicate issues that are/or could be seen to be inappropriate for posting on the main forum.Site rules explain this in more detail. If you are approached by private message with a view to asking you to visit another website, please inform the site team via the report icon.

Ok - I know Court is not for everyone.
I will suggest a simple plan of action.
Write to them stating that you think the charges are unfair, and do not represent their actual costs in dealing with the breaches.
Tell them that if they maintain that they are-to provide you with some evidence.
Until that happens you are disputing their figures, and as such they should not take any adverse action nor instruct third parties to seek collection.
Keep everything in writing and ask them to send you a copy of their complaints procedure.

I think you might want to ask the bank to refund all charges since all Direct Debits were cancelled. Do you know who they were to and why they were attempted to be taken out of the wrong account?

Yes one was a direct debiticon for paying off a store card which i cancelled as i now pay them by phone, and the other was phone insurance which i decided i could live without lol!
I just clicked the doo-dahs on my online account and thought it would cancel everything off, so i thought i'd close the account soon after. But that would be much harder than anticipated!

In that case write to them and state that the Direct Debits were being cancelled as you were in the process of cancelling the account. Ask them to refund all charges and close the account as you will never use the account again.
