Hello
I bought a car from a dealer a week ago, the tyres looked as though they needed inflating........on doing this yesterday I have discovered that all 4 tyres are bald. I was unable to notice this until inflation.
The dealer is 90miles away and I dont fancy chancing driving that length to get back to them to sort it.
What are my rights? Any info gratefully received before I contact them.
Re: Bought a car from a dealer - all 4 tyres bald!

Re: Bought a car from a dealer - all 4 tyres bald!
That was to check if the MoT was issued while the tyres were in that state.
Did you get an advisory with the MoT and are the tyres mentioned there?
If you haven't got an advisory then go here and check out the original MoT as it was issued: MOT Information - Introduction (it's free) and if there was an advisory with it.
You will need to ask an MoT station to measure and certify the tyres for you.

Mustn't just jump in at the deep end. A visual inspection, unless you can see the tread depth indicators clearly, may not be enough. If the permitted amount of tread is on all the tyres, then you could ask for a new set or a substantial contribution towards them.
If you believe they are below the minimum required by law and are willing to go as far as court to back up your claim, then you will need proof that they are in fact illegal and that should come from an expert ie; an MoT station.
Of course there may be no problem at all in getting them changed, the dealer hasn't been contacted as yet, so that is your first call and see what reaction you get from the dealer.

Re: Bought a car from a dealer - all 4 tyres bald!
Your rights are under Sale of Goods Act and if the tyres turn out to be below minimum, then speak to the trader and find out what he is going to do. You may still have the option to reject the car if you can show that the car is not of satisfactory quality in that it is not safe.
Re: Bought a car from a dealer - all 4 tyres bald!
Just take it back after checking that they are fact illegal and get them to change them! then see where you go from there, does make you think what the rest of the car might be like though if the are trying that one.
Did you take it for a good long test drive?
Re: Bought a car from a dealer - all 4 tyres bald!
Hi Everyone,
I contacted the dealer and he said that as it was a 2nd hand car they would put 2nd hand tyres on it, of course I wasnt happy and I certainly wasnt going to risk points and a fine by driving it. The cost of 4 new Pirellis with valves, tracking etc comes to £350 as there is an offer on at ATS at the moment.
The dealer has paid £200 back onto my debit card towards the cost.
I think that was a reasonable outcome better than risking them putting remoulds or worse on!
The car is in good nick, low mileage and has a FSH and I drove 300miles over the weekend plus 90 miles home after purchase so not concerned about the rest of the condition and I have a 6 month warranty.
God I was cacking myself when I discovered the state of the tyres as I was working at a police station over the weekend!
