    Default Query over tax

    Hi all,
I'm posting on behalf of my brother. Last year he did one week's temporary work being a car park attendant at a local agricultural show. At the time (of either recruitment or once he had been accepted I'm not 100% sure), he gave them his NI number as requested. Last month he received a letter saying he hadn't paid tax in this income and included a stamped addressed envelope for his cheque.

I was of the opinion that it is the company's responsibility to ensure all applicable tax was paid, and if this is the case he should just reply explaining this.

    Is this correct?

    Thanks for your time

    xxx

If he owes tax he owes it to HMRC not the company he worked for. As long as he declares the income to HMRC he'll be ok.

If this is the only work that he did last year then he won't owe any tax anyway

yes indeed, but his payslip should show this, do not pay any money to a company saying that you need to pay tax, ask them instead for a payslip if you havnt already got one.

Quite. I'm wondering if a routine revenue inspection at the company has picked up on something (like the absence of a payslip and statutory deductions).

Of course, the other thing is that, depending on how much paid work the OP's brother did last year, he may have no tax liability at all
