Forgot to cancel repeating billing for website. can i get a refund?
Hi
About 6 months ago I joined match.com and subscribed to a 6 month package costing 60 quid. I only used the site for a couple of months and had totally forgotten i was a member.
But when I checked my bank statement today, they had taken another 60 quid because my 6 months was up, and subscribed me for another 6 months.
I suppose it was my fault because they do state that the subscription recurs and there is the opportunity to cancel the subscription at any time, but I still feel ****ed off, especially since I've not used the site in over 4 months.
Is there anything I can do? I paid by switch, but even if it was by credit card would I be able to do a charge back?
I'm certain that match.com would just say tough luck if I emailed them and refuse to refund.
Does the fact that they didn't email me to say that my subscription was ending soon and that I would be automatically rebilled, and didnt email me to say that they had billed me have any relevence?
I logged in and cancelled my subscription as soon as I saw my bank statement, but that was 7 days later. Isnt there a cooling off period or something for buying things?
Re: Forgot to cancel repeating billing for website. can i get a refund?
Not an expert in this area so can't give much for you I'm afraid.
Personally i would so it's tough luck. But always worth going through their terms and conditions. Even if it states you should have received an email there ill probably be a disclaimer that if that email is sent but not received, or read, by you then they have no liability.. as long as they have sent it.
That's why i don't like these automated subscription sites.. they rely on people forgetting to cancel. Must make them a lot of money doing that. Been there myself and i'm afraid i had to put it down to experience.
-Any advise I give is based purely on my own experience. It should not be solely relied upon as I am NOT a legal expert and any major decisions you make should not be based on my opinion alone -
HFC Bank - Davey vs HFC
Barclays - Monthly payments made
Cahoot - Agreement received, awaiting 2nd agreement after DCA.
MBNA1&2 - Agreements received. (Currently in limbo)
Halifax - Davey vs Halifax/Cabot
MINT - Davey vs Mint
Amex - Davey vs Amex Cap1 **WON** £1,500 Written Off Davey vs Cap1
a sort of fire-fighting role here. Hate HFC & their past compulsory PPI ethos

NEVER EVER - act on a private message asking you to visit another website, make contact 'off list' or by telephone
- alert the siteteam IMMEDIATELY by hitting the black warning triangle on any message - Particularly if this results in a request to pay a fee to help you.
rather than hittting to be my friend - hit the star

Only valid if they point it out to you that it is recurring debit and/or you have ticked box reading their terms and conditions and not assumme that you have read their terms and conditions on a seperate page. After all they could include that the fee will double avery six months!
I did not realise when I signed to a site, they did not say anywhere that it would automatically debited, except in the small print about 3 pages on.
Did a charge back with BC and they refunded the fee.
Re: Forgot to cancel repeating billing for website. can i get a refund?
Send them a complaint stating how surprised your were to discover that they had debited your account, especially as you had not received a reminder from them advising that they were going to do this (not essential but good practice).
Cancel your membership and state that you want a refund.
Also express your disappointment with the site and explain that you had not used it for the last 4 months and whatever else you feel is relevant.
If you feel I've helped then by all means click my star to the left...a simple "thank you" costs nothing!
