Default Can my work do this?

Hi all, Ill try to keep this as simple as possible, My employer sent me on a college course, its once a week for 6 months, an they made me sign some paper saying if i didnt complete the course i would pay for it myself. Anyway, i was going regular, soon to take my first part of the exam when my wife had big problems with a twin pregnancy, she needing looking after so i spoke to my employer asking if they could ask my college if i could take a break for a short while until the twins were born, they agreed i could take a short breakicon but not much as theres only a scheduled time for me to take it, fair enough, During this time i had an injury, an im now awaiting surgery on my shoulder, im of work, have been for weeks an its gunna be long term, dont get sick pay, only stat sick pay, which my employer is saying he is going to take my course money from that! surely this isnt fair, i fully intended doin this course, its in my interesticon to do it, an i enjoy it, but i havent been able to, had so much go on an my injury is topping it of, my work wont listen an are being arses, saying my stat sick pay will be stopped for 4 weeks to pay for the course, so i get nothing for 4 weeks, can they do this? sorry im going on but am at my witts end. thanks

Can you still attend the course although you can't physically attend work? We have used this method before successfully.

I suspect that your employer is entitled to recoup the cost of the course if you don't complete as you agreed to this, however they should be taking reasonable installments that you both agree to - as you are off sickicon they may be worried that you won't return so will lose the ability to reclaim from your wages.

    Are you in a union?

no theres no union, its a small family run buiseness that make the rules up as they go along, i understand i signed the agreement and havent stuck to it, and i think it would be to late to carry on now, beem 1o weeks since i last went, i wouldnt mind paying them back abit by bit, but they saying they going to stop my next 4 ssp`s to pay for it, this leaves me\with nothing!
    surely thats beyond reasonable?
