    Angry Dilema about safety

    Hi

I have been asked to be on duty a a show home - an apartment which is the only one in the entire development which is completed and the rest of the site is under construction.

In the week, this is ok as there are builders about and I do not feel so isolated. However, at a wekend, the site is deserted with just myself in the show property.

I feel very vulnerable and not safe and have expressed this. I have been told I have to do this but I don;t feel safe in doing so.

It has now been put to me that if I do not work as outlined above, I am not doing my job and put into the position that, if I refuse I will be disiplined and probably dismissedicon.

    any thoughts out there?

Make thorough notes of all conversations regarding this and keep them properly organised at home. Keep your notes fully updated.
Do you want to keep on working there?
How long have you worked there?
    Is there a union?
Have all of the exchanges you have had been verbal or is there anything in writing?

Please don't pm me about specific questions unless you have posted and it has not been dealt with or unless the matter is confidential.

Your right that this is a H & S issue.

Does your employer have a lone worker policy?

See HSE information on lone workers:

I have worked there for 15 years. Exchanges have been verbal only. There is no union. There is a lone working policy which is a control that you ring into and then confirm when working is finished. I accept this is better than nothing but I also think that if anything happened and this is only discovered when you do not ring in to sign off, it is too late - damage has already been done.
