Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
Ok, due to personal family circumstances, not bereavement, just the well being of the children, my OH and myself have been left with 2 grandkids to bring up. Now I know that everything has to be sorted out legally, but who do I speak to for advice/guidance ? Any help really appreciated as I need to get this sorted ASAP.
Thanks.
Re: 2 New additions to the family ............ HELP
The Welfare Rights Officer would be a good place to start as obviously you will need to look into what benefits and servcies are available to you. You can find their number on your local council's website. I can speak from experience with them in my area they have been brilliant. I am sure there will be other people along to give you more help and guidance and with more indepth insight.
Re: 2 New additions to the family ............ HELP
I would also recommend an appointment with the local council welfare rights officer. Specialist knowledge is important in this sort of case.

Is this to be a permanent thing?
Top of my head, you need to get child benefit transferred to you.
Do you rent? Housing benefit.
Council Tax benefit.
Do you guys work/not work? Tax credit etc...
There are just too many variables depending on your circumstances, but the direct.gov website would be a good start to look into.
Depending on the age of the kids and whether they were already in this area, you might need to think about school registration too.
How are you for furniture/clothes etc? Freecycle or a callout to friends who might still have things in storage could help you with starting stuff.
Anything else we can help with, just ask, but make sure to give us a bit more info.
Good luck.
Apologies to people who I was in the process of helping, I may be gone some time.

Yes, it will be permanent, we are a bit unsure of the legal side at the moment.

Thought about that but we assume we will need documents and proof they are now in our care first.

It is rented, we don't get any Housing/Council Tax Benefit as my wife and eldest son work and he lives at home

Wife works and gets a very small amount of Tax Credit, I get IB and DLA.

The eldest grandson is nearly 8 and the other 6.
They are local, only 10 mins in car. The school is another issue we are concerned about, we would obviously want to move them to a school nearer to us. Where the school is now may only be 10 mins or so by car but it's about 30 mins minimum walk.
The school near us is 5 mins accross the road, ideal for all concerned.

Re: 2 New additions to the family ............ HELP
If you do encounter problems moving them school a visit to your local councillor's surgery would be a good idea. My daughter had to do this when she wanted her son moved and once he became involved they transferred him. However, given your circumstances I cannot see that the school would be difficult with you unnecessarily.
Its not an easy task you are taking on as I looked after my 8 year old granddaughter for a couple of years whilst my daughter was very ill and I know whilst the mind is willing the body sometimes gives up on you.
Re: 2 New additions to the family ............ HELP
I would speak to social services and get them onside to help you, I suspect you will need to look at issues such as legal guardianship and perhaps a residency order to ensure the future stability of the children and to ensure you have the legal right to make decisions on their behalf.
