Sky+ problems, when best to phone to threaten cancellation
We've had our Sky+ service for just over a year now, and have been with Sky for several years. We're on to our fourth Sky+ box and this one has just gone faulty. Luckily last time they extended the warranty for us and we're still within that period.
I've no confidence in the standard Sky+ box now, and I was hoping to wangle a free upgrade to Sky HD.
Anyone managed this? It'd be nice to get a discount on the HD fee (Virgin is offering HD for half what Sky is, could this be used as a bargaining tool)?
Re: Sky+ problems, when best to phone to threaten cancellation
I don't think they have any offers for free hd at the moment.
Sky HD £49 at the mo and if you wangle you may get free install.

Well I had 5 faulty Sky HD Boxes in 6 months... so don't hold your breath for them being of any better quality than the standard Sky+ box. :-|
Re: Sky+ problems, when best to phone to threaten cancellation
Your choices are to move to Virgin and take up their offer or to tell Sky that if they don't match Virgin then you will be leaving them for Virgin.
This may or may not work even though Virgin is Skys biggest rival, so be prepared for them to say "Ok, bye bye".

Re: Sky+ problems, when best to phone to threaten cancellation
I rang the customer services and basically asked them how I went about cancelling they asked why and I said I was going to Virgin as they were cheaper and I wanted to upgrade to HD - now what I will admit to here is that Virgin is not even in my area so very cheeky of me!
Anyway he went through a big spheel about their HD and gave me the £49 box offer + free installation.
I said no way been a customer 7 years gotta do better than that
He said they couldn't so would put me through to cancelations
Get a guy in cancelations and go through the same process and to my absolute horror he starts going through the cancelation steps telling me when my last DD will go out etc.
I am half a second away from shouting No - I was chancing my arm sorry don't take my TV away
When he suddenly says can I just put you on hold?
I'm there on hold trying to plan how I can climb down from this self inflicted position without losing too much face when he comes back and says
If we offer the box and installation for free and 3 months half price on your package would that be a suitable offer to continue as a customer
Err yes very thank you
The moral to the story? Don't threaten something if you are either not planning to follow it through or if you are not prepared to hold your nerve to the very end and perhaps have to suffer an embarressing climb down!
But I have to say HD worth every penny (especially as it's currently half prcie pennies)
I am a layperson and have no legal training but I do have an iota of common sense (sometimes)
Welcome Finance PPI -----> over £3k court case filed SETTLED
Park Motor Finance -----> incorrectly logged default on credit file claim for compensation
Lloyds Tsb ----> plenty of things all filed with Financial Ombudsman or Small Claims ----> settled by paying me full amount sought 02/05/09
