    Default Carers allowance

    I have heard that for someone to get carers allowance they can not live at the same address as the person they care for is this correct?

    Sorry, no, that is NOT correct. Most carers are live-in as they usually are family members.

    Think of all the parents who look after a disabled child. Think of all the spouses who are carers for their partners.

    I don't know where on earth you heard that one!

    You can claim carers allowance if you live at the same address as the person you are caring for. Most existing claims for Carers Allowance are people who care for their partners

    In actual fact, if you are caring for a spouse/civil partner with whom you reside you may be entitled to an increase of Carers Allowance if your earnings are less than what the extra Carers Allowance would be.

    thank you for your replys ,i thought it was strange that you could not live at the same address as the person you are caring for.


    I was informed by a family friend that you can not claim if you live at the same address.

    Glad to reassure you! If the person who requires care is over 65 and has a disability they may be able to claim attendance allowance if they need assistance because of their disability. If they are under 65 and have a disability which affects their day-to-day living and renders them incapable of doing certain things, they may be able to claim disability living allowance.
