Thread: Egg will not allow me to Check my account before I Settle it.

I have recently had my Egg account discontinued by Egg after they closed the many accounts, for some reason my ex wife phoned them up and told them I was living abroad (which is true at the moment as it has been to their certain knowledge at other stages of my over 10 year association with Egg) and they then closed my account because of this.

At the time I was first notified of this I owed about 800GBP now after two payments I owe about 250GBP , by the way my acount is being conducted properly with minimum deduction from bank account each month.

I have told Egg a number of times that I wish to pay off the remaining balance and will they please allow me access to the account to check the balance. This they have refused to do and tell me to contact their collections department which I have replied is irrelevant as it is they who are behaving 'outside the envelope', I have also told them that unless they allow me access to my account to check it I will suspend payment until the matter has benn resolved but offerred to continue paying the minimum paymeny without interest until the account is clear. I have stated that they are effectively forcing me to pay interest on the balance when I am ready to pay it off by denying my right to check my balance.

I have not received a respose to this but normally the responses ignore the content of the email and tell me to contact their collections department.

Does anyone have any take on how I should proceed? I have also told them I will notify the Banking Ombudsman of their behaviour, would this be a good idea?

Any advice will be gratefully received, although a small matter I would love to take what ever steps are possible to get access to my account.

I would CCA them, you would at least get back a statement of the account along with your CCA and T&C's...
I stopped the DD as they took no notice of mine.
Don't talk to them on the phone....letter only.
Send it recorded then you have proof they received it.

You're right, when you CCA them you should get a statement of account with the outstanding balance. Also if they have discussed your account with your exwife they have breached the DPA.

Not advisable if you want to settle in full and would prefer not to have a default on your credit file for 6 years.

One option would be to send a letter stating that payments will be made under protest and reserving your rights in all respects.

Then Subject access request, complain to the Information Commissioner on Day 41 (I can tell you now that they won't provide any information within the time limit).

If there is any money overcharged, bring a small claim for the excess paid.

That way, you settle the account, protect your credit rating but also protect your right to claim back any overpayment.

If I was intending to fully pay up 100% of the balance then I would probably just call them and agree to speak to their Collections Department.

If you don't want to do that then the Viscount's advice is a good alternative.

I really don't see the point in trying to "sod em" if you are going to pay the account off soon anyway. That could result in a default notice being issued, harming your credit file for 6 years - all for no reason.
