SLC to pay borrowers due to deflation
In yesterdays Sunday Times there is an article about the implications of deflation. It says that SLC is legally bound to follow RPI in setting the interest applied to pre-1998 loans.
If RPI becomes negative- ie: inflation drops below zero, SLC will have to pay people money for having a student loan, instead of applying interest for the privilege.
Last weekend the mail also had the same story ie deflation = SLC paying borrowers to have loans, however it also said that the government would decide later in the year what approach they would use regarding student loans.
Reading between the lines I would assume that that means, no, the SLC will not be paying borrowers.
Shame because them paying students instead would have been great!
