EHIC (E111 as was) online - Beware of fee-charging sites
Not sure where to put this, so here probably best, unless someone can think of a better place (no vulgar suggestions, thank you! )
I was looking for the link for the EHIC (organising for 9 teenagers to go to France in August), and I noticed the first 2 links at the top of Google were:
Since I haven't needed to apply for one for a long time, I didn't know and so I clicked on the 1st one.
To cut a long story short, it tells you you can apply through them, which cost £9.95, or through the PO, or "Or you can use the NHSBSA website which can be found here to apply yourself."... which is free, but they don't tell you that.
Point is anyone not really clued up could easily be misled into thinking that you HAVE to pay to get your EHIC, when it is not the case at all. If you apply online through https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/home.do and get it free, it is after all part of the NHS service.
So beware before you give all your personal data AND pay a tenner when you don't have to!
Apologies to people who I was in the process of helping, I may be gone some time.

Too late. I've already been caught out by that one
My daughter went to Berlin a few weeks ago, she clicked on the first link, said I had to pay £9.95. After transaction went through she went on Facebook and a friend had given her a link to the free NHSBSA site.
