It was a silly accident, last night. Whilst parking Grans car onto the sloping driveway of Grans house, he accelerated instead of breaked. The car pushed a concrete flower pot into the porch and virtually demolished three sides of the porch up to 4 feet above the ground. The outer skin of bricks were pushed through the inner air gap. The internal walls are not affected. The repair looks simply like removing the bottom half of the outer skin of the porch on all three sides and rebuilding with the same bricks.

The problem is that the house does not have accidental damage insurance. Although it is mainly Grans house, Mum and Dad share 30% of it as they live with Gran.

The car is virtually damage free, just a scratched bumper. Dad is not a named driver on Grans car insurance, but can drive her car on his own insurance third party only.

My view is that the third party should be able to claim against the car insurance but Dad does not believe the damage to the house is insured as the accident happened on private land.

Any assistance as to how to make a claim would be appreciated. He hasnt yet had time to speak with the insurance company yet or examine the small print. He is just nervous.

Cost of repairs I would say £3000 to the house. £25 to the car.

Have a look at the T&Cs to see if 3rd party on private land is covered

Assuming you dad has the "driving other cars" cover on his own policy, (which you state he has) then that automatically covers him for any damage he causes to third party property, be it a car, a person or a physical object (like a lamppost or a house) whist he is driving a car not owned by him.

Your gran needs to either call her house insurance people and get them to sort the repairs out, they will then claim this back from your dads motor insurers. OR just contact your dads insurer direct and let them sort it out.

Personally i'd ring up the house insurer as it would probably be quicker for them to sort this out.

Obviously this will go against your dads claims history so he might lose some of his no claims bonus over it.

Hope This Helps

Impact insurance. Thanks, that might work. He has checked his motor insurance and it states that if he has an interest in the property, he is not covered. He owns 22% of Grans house. So we think thats a lost cause.
