Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
I've been looking at the options for dragging myself into the digital age. Sky appear to be offering a Freesat deal for £73.40 called 'Pay Once View Forever'. They will install the necessary equipment and include a package for free for up to 4 months which can be cancelled at any time within that 4 months. Forget to cancel and you're tied in to £19.50/month. I would happily send in my 30 day cancellation notice on installation so it seems a good deal for me but I'm a complete luddite so would appreciate advice.

i was going to get the sky pay one view forever i saw it on Argos web site
but wasn't quite sure because it mentioned phone call charges and was wondering if you had to agree to get your phone calls from them
i didn't get it because i was quite worried about phone call charges thing
and to be quiet honest it looked to good to be true and i did wonder if there was catch
i hate bailiffs would love to put a hex on them all
I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination
any advice given is from my own personal experience and what Ive leaned on this site
and if you are happy with my advice you might like to make me a star
THE EDGE there is no way to explain it the only people who really know are the ones who have gone over and came back
You automatically get the 4mths of sky packages for free and if you don't cancel at least 30 days before the 4 months are up you are locked into paying for them. I'd be perfectly happy to cancel straight away as I'm not interested in anything but the free channels - I don't watch enough tv.
I didn't see anything about having to have phone calls with them - only that you have to have a landline and I didn't know why.
It seemed a good price for 'going digital' and I was hoping the catch was Sky's hope that people would forget to cancel the 'free' subscription package.
These are a minimum 4 month contract not 12 so even if you forget to cancel but they send you a letter nearing the end of the four months then call 2 months later you can still cancel.
deffinatley do not need to take calls

I too am now confused - I wish I was a lot younger and more techno-savvy. It appears you can get a free box from Sky outwith any of these packaged offers but it must remain connected to a telephone line for 12 months. Can anyone please explain why? I admit I simply don't understand it and apologise in advance if the questions seem simplistic.
my daughter reckons thats what it costs you to phone sky
and if you cancel you will lose some Chanel's that you get through freeview and only get the basic sky
by the way she is blond all brains and no common sense i am going to phone sky some time this week to find out about this package if i get any useful info i will post it

So that if you press any of the buttons that allow you to view a paid for movie or programme then Sky will know as the box will tell them and Sky can bill you appropriately.
How they will know after the 12 months I'm not sure, maybe it is disabled in the box after 12 months.

I believe it has to remain connected to phone lines as bt are part subsidising the package, also as previous poster stated the box transmits info down the phone line to sky if you order films etc

Aaahh, many thanks. In summary then you only get billed if you select billable programs and they want a 12 month window to try and tempt you. Seems OK for those of us unlikely to be tempted and with the added 'security' of all children having left home.
free box only avail if you subscribe to sky for 12 months
if you do not have a phone line to connect the box too then you can pay £25 to get out of telephone connection.
If you are in a digital switchover area and you are registered with the digital switchover help scheme then you can be eligable for free equipment and discounted multiroom.
if you were looking to get skyplus you would need to subscribe for 12 months £16.50 min package you could do refer a friend to get the free skyplus

I'm not doubting you at all so how come they claim the following - lifted straight from the website.
Equipment: You can receive a free standard Sky box without subscribing to Sky digital or buying this pack. Sky selects your equipment. Free Sky box must be connected to a telephone line for 12 months.
Could I also suggest that instead of giving money to Sky, who will want to upsell you everything from Box Office to interactive services down your phone line, so look at the pay once and forget/no DD required option from the satellite version of freeview, call funnily enough FreeSat (www.freesat.co.uk). Not only is there no requirement for a telephone line connection, they offer a range of standard, high definition AND PVR (like Sky Plus) recievers.
Thank you buzby. This is a whole new world to me. Whenever I have visited homes with digital TV I have only ever seen one of two screens in use - either a football match or people scrolling endlessly through a list of what's on without ever watching a program from start to finish. I can't stand football and I can look at listings in the newspaper so I've felt no urge to participate in the digital revolution until now
The sky box is generally attached to the phone line for a few reasons. Some were mentored above, e.g. PPV programmes and subbed boxes.
Its 12 months because that is min. contract. Generally, the box is meant to phone Sky periodically to give a "I'm here" message. This is to stop people buying (or getting) equipment in the UK and then taking it abroad and using it. Such activity is in breach of Skys Licensing agreements that are only valid in the UK.
The other reason is for Multiroom. It stops someone getting a second box (at £9.99 sub) with the same channels as the main subscription and then passing to a friend (or taking abroad). When the second box phones Sky, Sky will check the same number is reported as the main box call back number (i.e. that it is in the same household). If a different number is reported a signal is sent to block the card.
With only 1 box in your household it normally does not matter if it is plugged into the phone socket. Mine has never been plugged in! It is usually the multiroom that is enforced as Sky have more to loose from the subscription.

Try Freesat from the BBC/ITV as buzby points out. You get free HD (if u buy a hd box) channels and theres no catches like with sky.
Plus ive read rumors that freesat is the future and many channels will jump ship to freesat when they are out of contract from sky. (but dont quote me on that)
