    Default the other problem!

    Again about my daughter -

Before starting her first try at uni she had an account with the RBSicon. Her first student loan was paid into this account. She discovered that, as a student, she could get a better deal at the Halifaxicon and so late September 2007 she closed the account with RBS at the counter and was told that she could not transfer funds to a different account but needed to withdraw all her money and then deposit it in her new account. This she did. Since, I have just found out, she has been receiving a monthly statement form RBS on an account that was meant to have been closed and that has been accrueing monthly charges. She just buried her head, but has now been given a notice of default for £370, all of which we can only assume are charges!

As a student, she would struggle to pay this, and I'm tempted to pay it for her just to eliminate the worry but, quite frankly, I'm not too sure I should.

Again, any advice and next steps would be appreciated.

Have you looked back to see what actually started the charges and why she had charges? Did the bank not provide a student overdrafticon, for example?

Thanks for your reply. No, there was no overdrafticon on the account - which is why she changed to the Halifaxicon. She hasn't kept any of the statements that were sent her but thinks that when she 'closed' the account, there may have been an outstanding card transaction for £10 at the most and that this must be what the charges are built up on.

Student accounts usually do not incur charges for going over the overdraft limits. Worth getting that data and seeing how the charges built up.
