Hi, can anyone help here. I've received summons of £125 for not paying one month council tax. One letter arrived on end of January saying you owe one month worth council tax. In fact, the letter didn't mention which month and so I assumed that it might be talking about recent month's council tax, which I have already paid and so I didn't inquire further.
After couple of days I received a summons saying I need to pay £255 (£125 summons + £130missed payment ). When I received summons, on telephone inquiry I learnt that I missed paying December's council tax and I paid that immediately too. So far we are regularly paying council tax and due to holiday period, I just missed it.
When I went to discuss to council to nullify Summon's cost, council's representative said summons is not negotiable and moreover its my mistake so I have to pay otherwise they will send balliefs.
I confessed that it was missed to pay and it was my mistake and now I paid. Though I was honest and regularlly paying the lady was not ready to listen any further arguement.
Any idea, do I need to pay or I can save my hard earned money? Any suggestion to save money would be a great help.
Unfortunately the cost are taken from the arrears before the actual tax arrears. Issuing liability orders is big money for councils, they earn £hundreds of millions per year (not a typo), so they jump at every chance they can to issue one.
