Default step parents and uni grant/loan

    Hi.
My son was 18yrs old when i remarried he is now 20yrs old and a first yr uni student. I divorced his father when he was 6mths old and i have never had any maintainence from him.
When my son applied for his student loan/grant they took his step fathers income into consideration (i dont work full time my only income is carers allowance).

    Is that correct?

It seems wrong to me that his step father who he only known for 4 yrs has to have his income taken into consideration and expected to make up his uni money when his own father has never paid anything toward him. Also one of his housemates parents are divorced and only their mother's income is taken into consideration for loan/grant (even though their father earns twice as much as my husband) so resulting in them having twice as much loan/grant money as my son (who relies on us for extra money and we dont have that much because i have a disabled son and have high household bills).

All I can say is that when I went to university, my step fathers income was NOT taken into consideration.

I was under the impression that he would have had to legally adopt your son in order for his income to be counted.

    I could be wrong though.

Ah ok - apparently this changed in 2004.

In this case, unfortunately you will get no-where - there is no leeway for personal differing circumstances with these applications I am afraid.

    Thanks MrShed.
We seem to been on to a loser, which is so unfair seeing as he is nothing to do with him. Maybe we'll get divorced (kidding) seeing as he'll be off the hook so to speak.

In all seriousness, my parents (well, parent and stepparent) did delay marriageicon for this and other financial reasons, just in case!
