Unhappy Contract not being renewed after being assured it would (21 weeks pregnant!!) HELP!!!

After discussing my pregnancy with the managing director and HR manager I was assured that my contract would be renewed and even though there was no wage increase available my job would be safe. This had put my mind at ease until yesterday when I was called in to say my contract ended this friday (28th) and would not be renewed. I was told not to come in the rest of this week apart from Thursday to attend a meeting.

I thought that I would have been entitled to receive atleast 2-3 weeks notice as that is the notice period I have to give them for wanting to leave. I am also unaware of any action I can take against this as they have me in a corner really. Statement of intent says they will endevour to keep me on but if circumstances do not allow etc but the company have recently taken on 3 new people, all of higher wage bands than myself and so I feel highly discriminated against and do think they have done this as they are not willing to pay me maternityicon pay.

I am stuffed for finding another job as I am so far gone and am hoping some kind person looking for a temp will have me for the next 2/3 months.

I really do not know what to do or where to go with this as I am not a member of a union. I am visiting my local citizens advice bureau tomorrow (just going to walk in as I gave up trying to get through on the phone!) Any other comments would really be appreciated though. Sorry for the essay!!

Hi there, sorry to hear you are in this situation.

Were you on a fixed term contract? and if so how long have you worked under this contract?

This contract was issued to me in August 2008 which is when I signed and accepted it.

If you are on a fixed term contract then the contract ends on the last day stated, unless you are advised that the contract will be extended. Is there a different clause in the contract regarding the employer giving you notice?
