Default campaign of internet harassment and defamation

Hello, I've been subjected to a sustained campaign of internet harassment and defamation for several months which has left me depressed and unable to work. My employer has been unable to trace the source of the emails and the police, though sympathetic, told me the messages - sent to colleagues, friends etc as well as myself - do not breach the law. What can I do? I am now being subjected to vicious personal attacks in blogs and in Facebook.

The greatest strength of the Internet is its anonymity, you can always browse the internet under a pseudonym and no one will know any better. If you find yourself the target of Internet Harassment on social networking sites then you can normally get the people propagating this banned off the site, and their IPs blacklisted. The problem occurs when it's your own personal email or on a separate site.

Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to prove that some specific is actually attacking you. The only way you'd be able to tell is if they were from a company, and then you could request that the company checks their logs to see who's been looking at the site from work.

But back to original post, if the blog is on Wordpress or Bloggspot (or similar large site) you should be able to contact the admins and get the comments removed and possibly an official warning. Although the harassment laws are not the same in the US, there are similarities, and it's more about the negative PR that the blog company would get. Good luck!

    Steve

It is easy to determine the source of emails. It is extremely easy to find the source of blogs, facebook, etc. I'm not sure what your employer has to do with this, nor why you would expect them to help (or be suprised if they were unable to trace...). However, the number of times "help" messages have been posted, and the original poster never heard from again, means I'm not willing to go into it unless you return to the site.
