Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
I'm new to these boards but hoping you can help out.
I joined a gym in Scotland, started 1st November and took out a DD. The contract did state that it was a years memb with a 3 month cancellation.
Just recently I have had the opportunity to move to NZ and I'm leaving on 22nd April.
I wrote to the gym asking under these exceptional circumstances if I would be able to cancel my membership. they have replied saying as a goodwill gesture we will only charge you £223.25 to cancel. A discount of 20%. Some gesture
Are the laws in Scotland any different? This seems so unfair
If I knew I was going to be emmigrating I wouldn't have signed up.
All my UK bank accounts will be cancelled and I refuse to just hand over £223.25, could I make them take it monthly from my NZ bank account?
Re: Gym Membership Cancellation and Moving Overseas
The laws in Scotland are the same as everywhere in this. You just cancel the DD and go to NZ, end of problem.
Trading Standards wants your help
Dubious website businesses Conterfeit alcohol and cigarettes Illegal sales of alcohol, tobacco, knives & fireworks to children Cowboy builders or tradesmen Car clockers Counterfeiters Aggressive selling
Never phone or accept phonecalls from debt collection companies.
If you don't believe you can win, there is no point in getting out of bed.

Re: Gym Membership Cancellation and Moving Overseas
Hi again!!
Well I cancelled the DD, closed my bank account that I paid the DD with and jumped over to the other side of the world!
I redirected my mail to my friend as my leasing agent will charge me if mail goes to the flat I have now rented out. She scanned the letter to me by email.
It has now gone to a debt collection agency.....what happens now if I ignore it?
Will I get a friend from the UK to call the company to say I have now left the country??
