Hi
I'm looking for some advice regarding a fully paid up debt to Barclaycard. I was paying £50per month from August 2000. Until now I thught I would still owe on the account but I telephoned Barclaycard yesterday and they gave me the number of Mercers to call.
When I called today I was told that I was owed £15.97 as my debt had been paid. The only problem being that I was informed that no payments had been taken from my bank account since December 2006. This was incorrect as the standing order was still in place. I was told to call my bank to check this and they confirmd that payments had been made to a sort code and account relating to Barclays in King St, London.
Mercers have a completely different account number and sort code but the original standing order mandate was never amended. I tried calling the Barclays Bank in London but they would give me no information although I believe they found something under the account numbered quoted. They would not confirm this and told e i would need to go back to Barclaycard.
Barclaycard/Mercers have now said they cannot help until I have put the details in writing. I have, therefore, requested a copy of the original standing order mandate from my bank as well as confirmation of the total number of months payment was debited. I will then contact Barclaycard again.
I'm sorry this is so long but i was just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience and whether you could give me any advice which may help me.
Clearly you need to check that the pay'ts which you made to clear the debt were properly received and accounted for by BC or Mercers.
I'd write to Mercers and confirm there appears to be confusion about the pay'ts which you've made and could they send you a schedule showing all movements on the a/c since 2000.
I assume there have been no penalties on this a/c in the last 6 years, but please confirm.

Thanks for your reply. I was only told by mercers that payment had been made in full as of December 2006. They then told me I had overpaid by £15.97 but that they had not received any payments after that date. There was no mention of penalties but the original debt was £2,772 and I would have paid approximately £3800 by December 2006.
Once I receive a copy f the standing order mandate I intend to go back to Mercers and ask the to find the overpaid amounts.
If you've paid them approx £1K more than the £2700 you knew you owed, you need to check out why.
It may be they've been adding interest but I thought, when an a/c was being paid off in this way, interest and penalties did NOT get added to the balance.

I think I have been a bit stupid in letting this go on so long without checking the position.
I am going to try to get the overpaid amount back first and once that bit is resolved I will get back to Mercers to ask for a schedule of the transactions on the account. Maybe I might be due more money from them - here's hoping!
I'll keep you posted and once again thanks for your replies.
