Hi all,
Just had a bit of a shock to the system, got pulled over by the police for driving with no insurance, went past one of the cars with an automatic registration detector. Came as a huge suprise to me when they told me I don't have any insurance, they asked me details of who the insurance was with, told me they have checked with 2 databases but neither list the van with any insurance. I have been given 7 days to produce documents.
After taking out the policy, I received a couple of letters and have filled out the proposal form, and sent back the direct debit form.
With all of that done as far as I was aware, everything was set up and fine.
The van is for my business, which operates from a seperate address. The van is registered to my work place, but insurance documents come to my house.
The MOT is at work and I have been going all over the place trying to find certificate of insurance at home. With turning the house upside down I've found some mail and there is a letter saying that with effect from december, my insurance policy had been cancelled, the reasons for this were because of not receiving the documents. I know that I have sent them off, but I have no proof of it, as I didnt send them recorded, just put a stamp on them and into the letter box they went. My accountant deals with all of the bank statements, so I need to get hold of him to see whether or not payments have been taken from my account.
I've only received 3 letters from them, the 2 asking me for the documents, and this letter of cancellation. One thing that concerns me though is that the post code on the letters are for my work address, but the house number and street are for my house.
From a quick look on the net, all of the above is irellevant as far as the police go, because I was driving with no insurance. I'm planning to ring the insurance company to see what they have to say on it all, but I'm just guessing they will say they followed procedure for cancelling a policy, and thats that.
I'm just wondering exactly what things there are I can do, and what potentially might hapen to me.
I was going to look up what might happen to the van, but im too angry and upset right now to think about it.
Re: Stopped By Police For No Insurance (Unknowingly)
Update:
I've had a close look over the documents that I have here, the cancellation that I have is actually for the direct debit arrangement, and not for the insurance policy.
I've spoken to the insurance company, and they have said what letters they have sent, the ones I have received tallies up with 2 of the 5 they say they have sent. the last letter they sent was delivered by recorded delivery, but when they have looked into it, this letter has never actually been delivered. I mentioned the mix up of post codes to the person I was speaking to, and he said that the post code error was more than likely the reason for it not being delivered. He is suprised though that they did not receive the letter back. The management of the company are going to write a letter explaining all of the circumstances, and exactly what has happened. will a letter like this from the insurance company be sufficient for me not to receive points and fine?
