    Default Greedy Abbey

I am making enquirers about my elderly neighbour, she has not been with Abbeyicon and has a debit card plus a little bit of savings with these crooks as well. Her pensions goes into the new abbey account. Before she joined Abbey she also had a debit card with another bank and if she went over the amount in that bank the transaction did not go through.

Over the Christmas period she made some transactions and went over drawn but she plessfully went on spending as all the transaction with through therefore she thought that there was enough money to pay for the transactions.

Now she has got a bank statments from Abbey and they told her that they are going to take £60 off her becasue she owes this to them by way of bank charges.

She went into the local Abbey branch and was told there that she would have to phone them. she used the phone number that she got from them and used it at a 'national rate' and apart from not being able to understand the person at the other end of the phone because she talked so fast, all she could get clearly from that person on the phone was 'let me give you an overdrafticon' and asked my neighbour to just them a figure. Now, my neighbour did not want an overdraft facility as she had some savings in that horrible place and told the person on the phone this to no avail. However, she went back to her local branch and was told that there was £35.00 taken off the charges but the £60.00 would still have to be paid. My neighbour was not happy with this as she had savings in that horrible place and was not prepared to give them the £60.00 that all pensioners was getting in their pensions this month and asked to see a manager. She was dismissedicon by the person and was told they might be a manager back in the branch in a couple of days time. She then asked if she could make an appointment to see the manager when there was one in but was told that they do not have appointments and she would have to call in on the day to see if she could see a manager. What a shower of crooks, now they are robbing pensioners to pay to make profits.

Any help would be greatly appreciated on how to deal with these people, are they allowed to take charges on a debit card and is there standard charges or are they allowed to take what they like from account.

Abbeyicon's level of charges - like all of the banks are unlawful because they are unfair.

Your neighbour will have to claim them back and this will probably mean a court action. This action will be stayed pending the final outcome of the test case and it will be some time before she will get her money back.

She should log any conversation she has where she is being offered loans or overdrafts. In your neighbour's position this sounds like irresponsible lending.

The normal scenario is that you would be offered loans or overdrafts which in the medium term you would be unable to repay. The the bank starts levying large numbers of unlawful charges which very quickly increase your debt to a frightening level.
They then start trying to enforce the debt by means of heavy handed letters, cancelling of cash cards, seizing of benefits or pensions. All the time, of course the debt is subject to a higher rate of interesticon. They will, of course have entered a default on your credit file.
Eventually the bank sells the debt to a debt collectionicon agency which will be even more aggressive about getting the debt repaid. They will probably lodge a second default on your file - on the same debt. They will start to write to you and may also start telephoning you - often repeatedly at unsocial hours. Eventually they will threaten you with a court actin and if they think that you own a home they will try to obtain a charge on your property and eventually try to sell it.

Stay clear of overdrafts or loans merely to buffer an existing debt.
It is atrap set by the finance industry and once you are in, it takes allot of work to get out of it.

Your neighbour will need help to recover her bank charges.

Abbey are part of a dishonest and unscrupulous industry and as the going gets tougher for them, so they make it tougher from everyone else.

    thanks BankFodder for your reply.

It is sicking when these organization are able to get away with what they are doing, especially when they try and take advantage of the aged and vulnerable people to boosts their profits.

After my neighbor went into the bank again this morning she was told to come back tomorrow as the manager would be in meetings all day long.

When will it be know if bank charges are unlawful

my neighbour is going to cancel her account with Greedy Abbeyicon and I will try and get the charges back for her.

I have registered my neighbour account on line with abbey and can not find anything regarding payments that Abbey are referring to. It is only the statement that abbey sent to my neighber sent that the bank charges are on.

She will let me know what will take place tomorrow when she goes in to see the manager.
