Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
I have an urgent query. My sister put her Merc into the garage for a light sensor & one other prob. She was quoted 230 so said fine go fit. Prior to putting the car in a Rolls Royce mechanic checked the car over and said there were no major probs.
Anyway the dealership/garage now want 3k for what they say are many problems. This has been queried and then suddenly the price drops 25% .. i smell a rat. My sis was given a courtesy car also. She has complained over the weekend in writing and today they have come back saying if she does not pay up by close of business today the courtesy car will be reported to the police as stolen. We are talking a main dealer here.
1 take the courtesy car back to the dealership.
2 Have they undertaken work that was not authorised?

ok so she should take courtesy car back pronto ... fair enough. But the issue of cost is outstanding. I'm inclined to say take the 25% offered discount & learn a lesson?
if she has authorised the work then there is not much she can do about it. I would get your RR mech friend to inspect the car to see if the work they say has been done has actually been completed.
other than that its a spilt milk scenario.

when were mercedes bought by the the french winkler72?
its not a case of do not buy french- they seem to be a small step ahead all the time- its a case of wait and see if their technology comes good!!
They cannot report the loan car as stolen as they gave her the car to use but they can report unauthorised use but as this is a civil matter the police will probably decline to investigate.
If the repairs were never authorised, then the garage had no right to go ahead and repair any other issues however this may need to be challenged in a court with proof. Also the garage would have to supply proof that the repairs were done.
You may find a prelimary letter followed by a "lba" if the don't respond to the prelim may motivate them. This can all be tracked through the Small Claims court.

You are correct Hammy - a mechanic is a mechanic and a car is a car. There are no differences in a RR mech than a Reliant mech or any other mech, and no difference in makes of car.
Some cars have better quality parts, but when it comes down to it, they all have pistons turning a crank turning the wheels.

I beg to differ, "a mechanic is a mechanic, a car is a car".
Try it ask a technician at a Fiat dealership to sort out a 2006 Mercedes cls600 that has a fault with the instrument panel.
Funny the Rolls Royce technician did'nt spot the fault with the light sensor!
The Fiat mech is quite capable of fixing it, like any good mech, he will refer to the manual if it is unfamiliar.
The only difference is that it will take him longer than a mech trained and skilled on that particular car.

And the longer it takes the more you pay!!
Vehicles like most things now are highly specialised, complicated bits of kit.
The days of some guy whoes a bit "handy with the spanners" are over.
The number of times we see vehicles that someone has had a go at and screwed up, is getting alot more frequent, only last week we had a Range Rover that a guy had tried to fix using a 12v powerprobe, trouble is these days lots of vehicle systems are at much lower voltages, some even work on a signal via a optic cable, so he merrilly went round giving various systems a 12v supply, upshot blew 4 control units at a cost to the owner of 1600 quid!!!, I'm sure you would agree he was a great help! Original fault was a key had lost its settings so would'nt start the car, £45.00 job to reset.
Car manufacturers are like banks, profit driven at all costs, they don't make things easy for joe public.
Because people have been used to this wave of credit buying luxury cars on the never never, but they cant afford to run them (and I dont mean fuel), when the repair bills come in they can ill afford to pay them.
Would you expect the washing machine repairer to be able to repair your tv?
or the doctor at your surgery to be able to extract your teeth? no.
The days of "a mechanic is a mechanic, a car is a car" are well and truly over, just like the credit stream!!!!
1988 ford escort for sale 2 owners from new, no complicated bits.
We weren't talking about guys a bit handy with a spanner, but 'mechanics' which infers indentured and properly trained of which all marques, and dealers, have.
I agree that the days of 'all' repairs being diy by the owner are practically over, but the only difference now and with the 88 Escort is the addition of electronic control units and sensors.
I wouldn't expect a washing machine repairer to mend my tv, but I would expect him to repair any type of washing machine.

I think the RR reference was just to add a bit of super qualified snobbery to it, the guy might be super qualified at RR, but another guy might be super qualified at Fiat Panda's.
I had to fix a Fiat Panda a long time ago! Urrrrggg
