    Default Contact Lenses

    I'm a young adult and naturally do the whole "ahhh i hate my glasses thing".
    I really wanted laser eye and saved up, but found that you can't have it until your prescription has stopped changing.
    And that can take up to 4 years.
    So I was looking into contacts, but the only problem is, being very honest, i had to try them in front of the optician a few months ago and i struggled SO MUCH getting it out, and when i put it in i put it in the wrong way so it was very painful.
    So it was a bad experience.
    I panicked horribly when i couldn't get it out of my eye,
    so i was looking into ones you leave in for a long time so i don't have to keep taking them out ..
    but i've read bad things.
    I just wondered;
    1) Is there any you can leave in for a matter of time then chuck and put the next set in.
    &
    2) Can they ever truly get stuck?! And what would you do if they really did?!

    I'm just very frightened about them, sad i know.
    But I really do want contacts, my glasses are SUCH a confidence knock.

    I think this whole "getting stuck" business is a load of baloney. I know a couple of people who were monthly disposables for a full month without taking them out and have never had them get stuck.

    When you say "a matter of time" how long do you mean? a couple of days, weeks?

    To give you my experience, I started wearing contacts when I was 20. At first I really struggled for a good couple of months getting them in and taking them out. But you do get used to it eventually. It now takes me seconds to insert and remove. Its funny when I go to the opticians and take my contacts out in front of the "newies" who gape at how easy it is to do.

    But contacts are not for everyone though. If you really do not feel comfortable wearing contacts the stick with glasses.

    Why is it you don't want to wear them? I hope its not because of any bullying? Millions wear glasses, even people who do not need them!

    Is it an image thing? Maybe you should at changing your specs? Get a friend who you trsu to go with you and get a pair of specs that flatter you, then hold your head up high and walk around with the rest of us. No one will batter an eyelid (unless they fancy you!)

    the answer is yes - you can get contact lenses that you just have to change once a month, but they tend to be a bit more expensive than the ones you take out each day.

    I used to really struggle with my contact lenses, but I promise once you get used to it gets easier and you completely forget that you are wearing them. I found my own way of putting them in and taking them out because the way they showed me in the shop just didn't work for me. Took a week or two of practice, but finally I got there.

    I personally wear 'monthlies' that I put in and take out every day, and get a fresh set every month mainly because my eyes tend to dry up quite a lot, however a friend wears ones that she only takes out once a month and she swears by them.

    As for them getting lost in your eye, I have 'lost' quite a few contact lenses, they can get quite far back but you can never 'lose' them due to a membrane that attaches the eye to you. If you twitch your eye around a bit for a few minutes the generally just pop straight back out, which can be hilarious for you but usually grosses anyone around you out My biggest problem is rubbing my eyes too hard and breaking the lenses, making them fall out and never being able to find them (once had about 10 customers and 3 staff of a chinese restaurant crawling around on the floor looking for it when i was on a first date )

    Just on that point, I believe a lot of contact lens providers allow a free emergency pair or at least discount them.

    Losing them is a bit if a bugger, especially if you are as short sighted as I am, but you can always carry glasses as well.

    On that, I understand opticians advise you not to wear contacts all the time, but to also wear glasses. Whether this is just a ploy or not to increase sales I do not know.

    Don't worry about your contact lenses - what you should do is, like a good dentist, find an optician that you feel comfortable in and is easy to speak to.

    Putting them in is all about practice, I doubt you could effortlessly drive a car the first time you tried. (Think the first time I tried to put them in, I looked like some kind of Lord of the Rings creation!).

    Always good to keep the spex though, I have quite bad dry eye, so I have a few days of glasses wear a week just to give my eyes a rest. Glasses don't have to be a confidence knock though, why not get ones you really do feel comfortable in (again this is all down to your optician and the people that work there, their range of spex and how the store makes you feel).

    Hope this helps

    Hi Everchanging48, in answer to your questions;

    1) As much as a contact lens can adhere to the front of the eye if left in for too long, it cant get stuck 'in' or behind the eye, as there is nowhere for it to go.

    2) You can get lenses that you wear for long periods. These tend to be brands like Acuvue Oasys, Day & Night etc. It is important to remember though that not everyone is suitable for these lenses and if you do decide to have them yoiu should have regular contact lens checks. This is because tissues in the eye 'breathe' through the front of the eye, therefore putting a contact lens on stops this 'breathing' and can cause problems. This is what usualy makes lenses feel uncomfortable in office environments etc.

    Your best place to start is whichever optician you feel comfortable in. If you are going to use extended-wear lenses, just please please please dont buy them over the internet, its not a good idea
