OK, before I take my car to the garage tomorrow to find out what's wrong with it - can any of you experienced mechanically minded caggers offer any advice.
The problem is my car is "shuddering" when idle. It didn't want to start this morning (first time it's ever done that in 8 years!). It's not the battery as it's turning over OK, just feels like it won't "catch". It eventually did start later this afternoon but as I say it "shudders" when idle.
It's a Rover 420i by the way
Exhaust sounds a bit throaty too......
Thanks

That could be your problem. If you have a split exhaust pipe or damaged silencer it will upset the fuel/air mixture. That will cause all sorts of rough-running problems.

steam coming from an exhaust when it's cold isn't anything to nessicarily worry about. However it being a rover K-series I was wondering if we were possibly looking at the old rover head gasket issue. A possible indication of this would be excessive water coming from the exhaust. It might be worth checking the coolant and dipstick for signs of mayonesse but from the sounds of things I think the previous poster could be correct in thinking it's just a split/blowing exhaust.
It just sounds like it's going to stall. Having just gone out and started it again - the exhaust definitely sounds rough - when I have the door open and the engine running (well, staggering lol) there's a lot of "rumble" from underneath - sort of in the middle..... (forgive the descriptions, just remember I'm female and don't have the male mechanical vocabulary)
I had the cylinder head replaced 4 years ago - one of the coolant hoses was split and it got overheated. Also the first (original) cylinder head was replaced under Rover warranty as it was faulty, so this is the 3rd one!
I'm absolutely paranoid when anything seems wrong with the car as the above replacement CH cost me an arm and a leg!

If rover replaced the orignal head then they would almost certainly replaced it with one post fix. Lets just hope that when it was then replaced the 2nd time hopefully it'll have been replaced again with a post fix head.
Back to the problem at hand... it's sounding more and more like a split/blowing exhaust. Pure speculation here but if a central exhaust mounting rubber has failed and the exhaust is now sagging it's quite possible the seal where the exhaust joins is now split/blowing. Should be a cheap fix.
It might be worth checking the coolant and dipstick for signs of mayonesse
To clarify.....
If the head gasket is faulty and allows the engine coolant to leak into the engine oil. This forms an emulsion that looks like mayonaise or salad cream which you will see on the dipstick.
It doesn't taste like it, so keep it off your salad.

Let me poke my nose in as you have always been good to me, (that's got them guessing).
Rough running can be caused by a few things, as mentioned the exhaust if leaking can do it as there is a certain amount of backpressure required and that is build in. This is why some boy racers who put on their big bore exhausts without getting one that is matched to their car think the noise means they are going faster, but will find the acceleration is not as good as it was.
Because there is no water showing on the dipstick doesn't mean there is no problem with the head gasket.
There are a few other things it could be, but get the exhaust done first as that obviously needs doing, and see how it is then.
Unless the mech can show positively another problem, (it might be isn't good enough), listen to him but don't get it done until you've come back to us.
Are you due a service ? Remember that can come with time as well as mileage.

mechanics is like medicine - if someone comes to me with a heavy nose bleed and a low blood pressure I kind of figure that the nose bleed is the reason and treat that first - If we stop the nose bleed and the pressure stays low then we look elsewhere.
Fix the exhaust and see if that cures the problem.
