    Default Sainsburys Laptop

    So,

bought a Medion laptop Mid January 2008, the laptop now has around a 2-3" wide dark band in the LCD where the screen is barely visible, this is, at a guess, due to the soldering points on the rear of the screen drying out

Took it in store and complained to customer service, was told they only guaranteed electrical products for 28 days, after that I must contact the manufacturer

Quoted sales of goods act and the fact my contract was with them and not the manufacturer

Supervisor came along, same answer as customer service chap

Asked for manager, got the same answer, but with a promise to call me the next day after speaking to head office

He left a message on my answerphone the next day, basically repeating the same

So, do I now have a case to go to small claims with this un der the sales of goods act?

I presume that I am reasonable to expect at least 2 years use withouit issue from a £599 laptop?

Would it be best to "cover my *rse" by writing to head office to give them one last chance?

Why oh why do they continue to insist on doing this when they know that they are wrong. Lots of posts say 'don't talk to so and so as they don't know the SOGAicon', that is bunk, they know the soga and are attempting to get around it or not be bothered to do something when they think they can conn the customer in doing their work for them.

Ask them where the 'law' says 28 days and will they please show this in writing to you.

They can offer you direct contact with the manufacturer, and it's usually quicker to do it that way, but as others with more experience in this than me will tell you, if anything is changed by the manufacturer then they have a get out by insisting that it is not the machine they sold you.

Visit them again and make them take it. Who they use for repair is up to them.

    Well,

    here lies the point

I really dont want a laptop from a manufacturer that is incapable of making a screen that lasts for less than one year of (not that frequent) use

    So I want either

    a) a full refund

    b) credit at JS to the value of the laptop

    Am I entitled to this?

You wont get a full refund unless you can prove (at your cost) that it has an inherent fault. Of course, if the fault is inherent then you will be able to claim back the cost of an independent engineer giving you the report.
You will also get a reduction in any refund for the use and enjoyment you have had over the year.
