    Red face Illiteracy.

    Hi
'Came across a new 'problem' or 'challenge' if you like, the other day. I was extolling the virtues of this site to someone who works for me. It became painfully apparent that he couldn't read or write very well. He had also been hit with massive crippling bank charges which left him with no money at all for food or bills or anything-they emptied his account of wages etc.
Is there any way we can help people who are immediately disadvantaged by the fact that they are unable to read or write and can't access, so can't use this fantastic site to their advantage. Anyone have any ideas on how we can spread the message to those who are effectively illiterate?

i dont really know a right answer to that but to say that we cant change situations that effect us immediatly. there is no quick way of doing this, as it takes time and patience (when the banks dont do what is required of them). sadly there are lots of situations where people are left with no money for food etc and lots of these people are single parents. no one can afford to have houndreds of pounds taken off them on a regular basis. my advise would be to get some leaflets printed off and hand them out, or go into community centres and explain there what your worries are and see if they could help spread the word or write to your local mp.

There's no reason why you can get his authority (it would have to be in writing, but you could type it out for him to sign) for you to act on his behalf against the bank. Each time you write to the bank, enclose a copy of the authority letter and sign the letter: -

    Cats
    Authorised Representative of Mr Friend
(Using the real names, of course!)

    Jeep (The Wife & I)
Halifax joint a/c (£3800 charges + £40 interest on charges over 11 years) - paid in full 23/06/06
Halifax joint a/c new charges £1100 - LBA sent 02/08/06
    Halifax 2nd a/c (£1500 charges + £150 interest on charges) - partial payment received 13/07/06 (no s69 interest) - AQ filed 07/08/06 - Court awarded 50% of s69 interest (Bank didn't turn up!)
Halifax Visa (#1) Data Protection Act sent - statements arrived - £350 so far
Halifax Visa (#2) Data Protection Act sent - refunded £170
