Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
Hi i puchased a 40 inch erae lcd tv 28/2/06 costing £1.300 on the 2/12/08 we turned on the tv only to find we had only half a picture, we contacted dixons that day who said a engineer would call wednesday as we took out the coverplan costing £349. the engineer arrived on wednesday took one look at it and said they will write that off as we no longer stock parts for those when we bought the tv they had only just started selling them i thought that was terrible.
someone came the following monday to collect the tv we recived a phoncall on the wendnesday to say when the guy would call to collect it and that it was being wrote off as it wasn't economical to repair we have since been told we will get £450. for the tv and £120 for the insurance i have been into currys there isn't a 40inch tv in the store for less than £590 when we took the insurance out we paid for it as we was told we would get equivellent to buy a tv of the same speck or better , the amount they are giving us would buy a 32inch thats it i am disgusted as i paid cash for all of it and i was told a pack of lies where the insurance was concerned
As far as I know you are entitled to have the tv repaired or a full refund of the ammount paid. The ammount for the insurance seems fair but you should get the full cost of the tv.
I will flag this up for others to have a look and advise.
many thanks i agree on the insurance but when we went to dixons they said that they hadn't heard of that make yet i have recipts to prove i purchased from them, they guy in the shop said we musn't have sold them for long as i haven't heard of them
quick up date i have just been to dixon/currys and they looked on there sysytem for a 40inch tv for the £450 that they have given us in vouchers and they checked on there sysytem and there are no 40inch lcds in stock at all where i live so they looked at 42inch and there isn't any of those around that price the guy was disgusted as he thought it was low for what we paid he says tommorow morning he will try to contact the company and see if he can get them to upgrade the voucher so i guess i will have to wait more days without a tv gosh its dead without one although i only watch certain things but my daughter plays her wii on it she is well board
I belive the refund is pro-rata although I have no idea how they calculate it, suffice to say it should be enough to buy a TV of the same or better specification. But I'm not too clued up on this so I'll leave it to others to determine if it's fair or not.
The store has no reason to ask you about your previous TV short of asking about the spec so they can match it, showing them your coverplan vouchers with a proof of ID is all they need. But as for the value of your vouchers, the branch manager or customer services can have them upgraded by ringing up the service desk and having them issue a secondary voucher for an amount matching the remaining difference of your TV versus the vouchers you have. This should take them no more than 10 minutes and is much quicker than you arguing over the phone with the coverplan guys, and having to wait another 10 days for them to issue and mail your new vouchers. The staff should happly do this for you because those vouchers are just as good as you coming in an buying a new TV with cash. Also one other thing to note is that the coverplan and regular vouchers do not have to be spent on a TV with coverplan, the coverplan voucher is nothing more than a voucher and can be spent on anything. So, get them to upgrade your original voucher, then spend your coverplan voucher on something nice for yourself rather than a worthless coverplan guarantee.
Just be sure that when picking your TV the spec matches and everything because you are entitled to the same or better spec, don't let them fob you off with anything lower. Ask to see the specs on the computer or a paper printout too. I very much doubt we stock anything that is worse than your old TV, but better safe than sorry.
thanks for the info i asked over the cover plan and was told if i don't use it for the cover on somthing i have lost it i was rather anoyed at that as i have paid for it i should be entitled to that cost back he says it says on the bottom of the paper to be used towards your cover plan for replacement tv
Alot of sales staff tell you this to pressure you into taking a new coverplan guarantee. It's a complete lie, that voucher is a refund of the money you have remaining from your previous coverplan but as a refund it can be spent on anything.
Ask to speak to his manager if he persists, tell him your entitled to this voucher, and he either wants the extra £120 spent in his store or you'll go to another branch. But make sure you tell him that you'd rather leave with nothing than take another coverplan.
it states on the voucher that it can only be used against the purchase of a new agreement that was what he was saying
Must have been added to the vouchers then. We have been getting told off lately for not using the coverplan vouchers for coverplan. This must be their response.
Funny, they allow staff to spend the voucher on whatever they like.
In that case, buy something with a cheap 11.99 3 year coverplan like a digital camera or an I-pod, they can't reduce your coverplan voucher to cover just the 11.99, and it'll pay for the item as well. TBH, coverplans on small items like ipods and cameras are actualy worth it if your house insurance doesn't cover you for accidental damage on portable items. Because they're instant replacements, meaning you just swap them in store, no repairs.
Thanks for posting this.
I have one of these nightmare TV's, also bought in 2006. Since last summer it's started switching itself off after a couple of hours, also feels really hot, quite scary.
Only just realised we have a whateverhappens service agreement on it so will see what happens after engineer calls next week.
probably not too much to worry about, if its like a laptop it will auto shut off once it reaches a certain tempriture, the engineer will probably open it up, clean out the vents and it'll be back to normal
(or if hes in a rush he will try to just blow compressed air in the vents, i would ask for a full clean if he does this as while it might clear a blockage it ussually leaves alot of dust inside the machine to clog it again)
