Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
My partner is currently working on tour in Europe.
He flew out last week, arriving at his destination airport minus his luggage- lost in transit. The loss was registered there & then & a reference number issued. The luggage was located the next day & he arranged for it to be delivered by the airline to the next easily accessible address (being on a tourbus makes this awkward). The luggage was never sent & enquiries revealed that it had never been sent. Meanwhile, he has had to pay out for underwear, clothes & toiletries.
On finally making a detour back to the original airport to try & recover his property (which took a while, since no-one knew where it was), he's been fobbed off & told that the airline accept no responsibility for reimbursing him the extra expense for clothes, etc. for the past week.
Surely this can't be true?
They had a duty to deliver his luggage to the airport & then (when it failed to turn up) honour the agreement to deliver it to the suitable location?
Otherwise, can luggage just be left to travel wherever it wants, unchecked, belonging to no-one?
The fact that he was working made the whole thing worse- tools that he needed for his job were in the case (unsuitable for hand luggage).
They've suggested that he write to them on his return & they'll see what they can do, if anything, since they don't feel that this is their liability.
Any pointers as to what we should put in the letter?
He's kept receipts for items he's had to buy to survive, but surely, a week without your possessions is unreasonable?!
BTW, I've tried to check the website & it appears that Air France's liability comes under French laws- this may cause problems as I'm unaware of French law

My luggage was lost for 6 days on holiday this year. I finally got it back on the 7th day. (it hadn't even left Gatwick).
I managed to claim all immediate expenses, clothes, toiletries etc through my travel insurance. If I didn't have travel insurance, I could have claimed through Luggage Loss Adjusters who were agents of Thomsonfly who I was flying with.
Unfortunately, they couldn't care less that my holiday was ruined for 6 days though!
