Hi

Out of the blue I've got a new Council Tax bill.

I'm a tenant who was living with the landlord. Council tax for year is £1299, so it's £135 a month.

Landlord leaves in August and is replaced with a new tenant. I fill in a form to tell the council I will be paying the £135 a month from then on. No response but I continued to pay the £135 a month, so everything is correct and up to date. £270 is left on the account, which will be paid in December and January.

Out of the blue I received a new bill today headed 'New Account' with my name at the top saying I owe £858, to be paid at £286 a month until March. It says 'Charge for period 3rd August - 31st March'.

Along with it is a 'Single Person Discount Form', even though me and the new tenant are on the electoral register.

Before I ring them tomorrow, please tell me they've made a balls up!

Since Salford Council never acknowledged the change of account holder for the address, I just continued to pay online every month using the landlord's account number.

The new bill makes no reference to previous payments - it's a 'New Account' and assumes no payments have been made on the property for the last 4 months.

I told them about the change of circumstances at the end of July.
