    Default Returning kettle

I just returned a kettle and got it exchanged for a new one... thing is the woman didn't accept my return reason, which was that it lit up red when heating water which wasn't described on the box and therefore it was sold as "not as described". She made out she would do it "just this once" and that if I didn't like the new kettle I couldn't bring it back, making out as if I was being picky. This obviously annoyed me.

To further compound my annoyance, she made a point of telling the till person that they'd have to mark it as faulty "even though it wasn't" while I was in earshot, just to try and further ram home her point.

I'm interested to hear what people think about this.

Was this the only reason for returning it - the light lit up red?

What did the description say? It lights up orangeicon?

Yes it was the only reason. The packaging only indicated that it lit up when in standby - in blue.

I would have thought that they have to light up when switched on as a safety requirement.

    Just so i understand this................

    1. Did it light up blue when in standby as described on the packaging?

    2. What exactly don't you like about the fact that it lights up red when on?

    3. Does the replacement kettle also light up red when on?

Kettles do light up in general, but this one lights up the entire body of the kettle (light inside boiling chamber) instead of a smaller light like most kettles have.

    To answer your questions:

    1. Yes

    2. I don't like the way it looks and given that a kettle's design is one of it's main features I don't think this is unimportant.

    3. No, only the switch lights up when it's on.

    Fair enough then.

It wasn't clear to me from your first post that the WHOLE kettle lit up. To be fair I don't think that I would go for one like that either.

If you're happy with your replacement then fine.

As for the attitude of the shop assistant - she obviously needs to find a job that she can perform without wearing her smile upside down.

Absolutely. I knew from when I was first handed over to her and she kept me waiting for a couple of minutes while she was doing something else without even acknowledging my presence that it wasn't going to be an enjoyable customer experience.

On the point that I was within my rights to request a refund/replacement on the basis that it was sold not as described, do you think I'm right though?

Phil, you were quite within your rights to return the kettle as it was significantly not as described. Make a complaint in writing to the store about the unhelpful shop assistant.

And if you are not happy with your new kettle for a valid reason then you are entitled to return that one too.

(You do realise that from now on you will be know as "Phil the Kettle".

You could have returned the kettle as it was not as described but you should have had a refund not a replacement

Oh I'm sorry I shoudlnt laugh but Freakyleaky really tickled me with that!

Asst'dB is quite right - you should have got a refund. Is this colour change malarky a safety feature or just decorative (only I've seen some kettles on sale that are more like decorations as they change colour depending on the temperature).

If it's a safety I would have demanded a refund and reportted it to Trading Standards.
