Hi

I have received a council tax summons and need to go to court on Wednesday. They re asking for an immedaite payment of £800.00.

I did fall behind on my monthly payments and as I my income is the one in the household is it too late to apply for any sort of rebate?

Can anyone please advise.

Thank you

There are no reductions in council tax for low income however you may be entitled to claim Council Tax benefit depending on your income - this however wont be backdated very far but may help cover the balance due for the rest of the year.

Unfortunatly some LA seem to have different guidelines. My LA is very hot and when I missed a payment I got sent a summons. I rang the court and was told to ring CTax and we came to an agreement - they addded on the money and split it till the end of March 2009. Not very satisfactory as was on heavy medical treatment at the time and they still charged me £103 (included what I owed) for the issue of the summons. CTax are very scary people and even if you are now on a low wage they will still expect you to pay what you owe. (In fact they are problably the only people that are on my top prority list of bills!) I would put in a CTax claim asap and see if you can back date it (worth a try) from the time you dropped your income. You should go to your local Council area office where they have the forms and see if someone there can help you. They are pretty good and will be able to advise you of entitlements. Have you applied for Working Tax Credit? Hope this helps
