Smile Plastic Licence 10yrs your up for renewal?? £1000 fine potentially!

    hiya all

wanted to alert you all that my hubby has informed me that he was made aware that the plastic licenses we hold for driving are only valid for 10 years and thus need to be replaced at a cost of about 17.50 but if you have expired your 10 years potential fine of 1000 pounds,

so all pls check your licences and see if you fall as one of the first ones way back in 1998 in getting yours, i know that this could affect us all soon,

im going to investigate more but as a first thought wanted you all to be aware of your licence date

    ciao for now MAZ

You are right that the photo license only lasts 10 years so about now the first ones are just starting to expire.

As this is clearly catching a few people out, even the DSA are allowing people with out of date photos to still take a driving test if necessary (although I think they are asking that you also bring your passport with you like you do for the old paper license).

Not sure if the police are being advised to be equally leniant. One would like to think so, but as ever the sound on the cash machine may outway good common sense!

It's very confusing when you look on the plastic licences as it still has the expiry date of the day before a persons 70th birthday on the back of the card but it has the 10 year expiry on the front.

It's yet another cock up by DVLA in not making it clear enough to people that they do need to get the licence changes every 10 years to allow an updated photo to be added.

They allow you to apply for a new photocard and can get your passport photo if you hold a UK passport so I wonder if they can update the photo from passport agency records in the same way?

As I work in DVLA, I can help.
It is only the photograph that expires, your driving entitlement is NOT affected at all.

    Hi Y'all,
I am a newbie, and repeated searching on Google pointed me to this Forum! For anyone working in DVLA my question will be walkover, but it sure as h*ll baffles me.
I went through the 70 age barrier this year and had to renew my license. upon receiving my shiny new plastic photolicense I tucked it away in my wallet and I thought that would be that. However, the age related email warning currently circulating on the internet caused me to relook at my new photolicense, and wow, I was surprised to find on the back that although issued this year it is only valid until April 2011!
As required by law I ticked the angina box, although it well under control and has never given me any bother whilst driving or otherwise.
No indication, notification or warning was enclosed with my new license pointing up this unknown restriction.
Can anyone shed a little light on this state of affairs?

Yes it is only the photo part that expires, however, as you would need to present both parts to persons such as the police, or if have a need to take any type of further test, then effectively you are not holding a valid license.

Bearing in mind the DVLAs recent (ongoing) cock-ups with removing peoples entitlement to drive certain classes of vehicle when they change their license, I dread to think how many licenses they will screw up now that many thousands more people are requesting replacement licenses.

It is my understanding that once you have reached 70 years-old, your licence renewal is only valid for three years at a time, but the issue is free.

After the first renewal (at 70), you can no longer renew on-line, you must use form D46P

Just as well I resisted the temptation to swap my paper licence - which still has 20 odd years left on it. Another benefit for being a stick-in-the-mud!

    Hi, AIG.
I'm now on my third plastic licence. I had my first one at 55years, (I'm now 61).
