When Egg agrees to refund, as they will, they will automatically offer 8% per annum interest compensation. In these credit-crunched days when Egg are hard-up they will not budge from that position.
If you wish to reclaim debit interest apparently accrued on unlawful penalty charges, you would need to become an expert on all angles of computation, including the order in which your money payments wiped out the different debit items, e.g. cash advances, purchases, penalty charges. If Egg decided to fight your interest claim in court just to discourage the others, you will need to put up a very articulate showing in court, with outcome unknown.
So if you will be content with 8% per annum, then just claim that, and there will be no resistance from Egg.
