Thread: Freelander wagon 1.8, Major gearbox and brakes problems.

Hi everyone. Im new to this board. Hope I could get some advice.

I bought a Freelander 1.8, 2000, for 2500 pounds on Mid Sept. It has already done 60000 miles. After 2 weeks driving it, within 500 miles, i found that there is some major problems with the gearbox and the braking system. I m seeking for a refund from garage. I sent them a complaint letter, under sales of good act, already.

The MOT is going to expire on late October. When I bought the car, i asked the dealer to include MOT, but he refused. In return, he said he could give me 3 months warranty, including any fix and parts. The car didnt come with full service history but only 2 years and MOT record. (sorry, i know i sound absurd. this is the first time i bought car in UK...).

The problem popped up while I drove it back to birmingham from cambridge. There was some noise came from underneath and the stick (stick that change gear) was getting loose. I was able to drive it back. However, when i reversed the car, there was some real big noise... The other day, I took it to mot. It failed. It was said that there was some problems with the ABS system. And they found that gearbox and braking system got some problems. They adviced me to send it back the car and get a refund.

I called up the garage and told them what happened. Since I bought the car in leicester and im now staying in birmingham. They asked me to take the car to the nearer garage have a check first by myself. But I didnt. Becos I changed the tyres and have a steering check (80 pounds) and MOT it (50 pounds) and i dun think i should pay for anything more...And I asked them to take it back by themselves yet they refused. So, I have to pay 130 pounds to tow it back to their garage.

The garage now referred me to someone else (lets call it Mr.A) and they said Mr.A would be responsible for the car. Mr.A told me the car now is staying in gearbox specialist two weeks ago. He said he would give me a call but never. I did call him, but he just dragged me on.

In our conversation, he said the car was sold in perfect condition (without any written report to prove it)... and he said he drove the car for two weeks and he didnt find any problems with it. But, he was not the previous car owner. And now, he said I damaged the car and I have to pay for all the costs.

I got my driving license for almost 4 years and I drove since then. And while i drove the freelander, i got friends with me (they are drivers as well). And they didnt find any problems with my driving skills. So, I believe that I didnt damange the car.

I sent them the letter already. And I called the consumer direct. However, if they refuse to refund, what could I do? or anything else I could do now?

Hi Land Rover Freelanders have so many problems that I ended up selling mine at a loss. I agree that Consumer Direct should help you. Good luck.

I would also contact the previous RK - name and address on V5 - and see if he knew of any problems with the ABS/brakes/gearbox.

Err, you buy a car in October and the Mot expires late October and the dealer refuses to Mot the car before you buy it? That would have been the time to walk away.

Yeah, you're right. But the OP could still have insisted on a new MoT from the day of purchase. Six weeks MoT is not a lot. He should have walked away. If any vehicle I have for resale has less than nine months MoT I always get a new MoT done before the car goes out.
