Default Paypal issue- MMORPG Gold Sales fraud?

Hi, a quick introduction: My name is Lawrence and I'm a high school student in the US, and I came about this website by searching for similar issues with the one I'm having.

So this September I sold a substantial amount of an online game gold to someone who I was in the same game 'clan' as me. He payed me 720 usd via paypalicon for the amount with the claim and cancel method (can't file multiple claims, thus ensuring the seller keeps the real money).

I withdrew all the money into my bank account and now, a month later, the claim has been reopened and there is a fraud investigation. I'm not insured under any of that Sellers protection hocus pocus because I sold a "non tangible item" (either service[hours of work for the game gold] or just game gold, however one may put it). Thus, I can't resolve the claim without refunding them.

Now, I have a negative balance of 720 usd and paypal asking for pay. When I called paypal to ask what happened, they told me that I'm under fraud investigation. I explained the situation he said something along the lines of "tough luck kid, these are the risks of a merchant."

Honestly, unreal. I used paypal because there was minimal risk, and now even though someone else apparently paid with a stolen paypal account for my goods (tangible or not), I'm the one paying for it. Not only that, this happens a month later, when I spent a significant portion of it. I have no means of dispensible income (working 5 hours a week to pay for gas money) and I am already getting little sleep due to school as is, and now I have this bogus to deal with. I feel like that Paypal is using me as a scape goat for its poor security and rather make me, a bystander, pay the loss, instead of tracking the real criminal.

The representative I spoke to said they will send a collection agency after me if I don't pay, and freeze my bank account and take my meager checks until the debt is payed. Currently the money going towards my negative balance is being held, but the representative told me for a game gold sale, I'm sure to lose this.

Is there a way to resolve this matter without losing too much? I am going to pester paypal about this as long as possible, because I feel as though I have been wronged. Could I offer a settlement with paypal or the collection agency, or perhaps there is a more effective way?

For me, this is my first online transaction, and I really am not sure how to deal with this. Help and thank you!

Zoogiewoogie, welcome, but this is a UK based site and any advice you would get would be based on UK law, so I'm sorry, but I don't think anyone can really assist you with your issue here.

Apologies to people who I was in the process of helping, I may be gone some time.

I would advise looking for a paypalicon specific website, especially one that is based in the US as they will be the ones more able to provide you with the advise you need.

I am happy to offer helpful advise in many consumer problems based on my retail experience. I do not represent any company, and any advise I do offer is my opinion and how I understand the law. I have no authority to create any terms for any company I do work for and will just nudge you in the right direction without breeching their trust.

I would expect that they can not freeze your account or take your pay cheques (what we'd call a garnishee order) without a court order. Let them take you to court and make them prove what they allege is what I'd say. I obviously don't know the specifics of the American system in this regard, but I would be very surprised if they can just unilaterally have your bank account frozen.
