Default Needing help with parking ticket

I was wondering if anyone could help, basically I parked outside Hither Green train station in Lewisham at around 7.40am, it used to be free parking but recently they seem to have put in pay and display meters. After finding this out I had to run around finding somewhere to get change only to find that the machine would not accept my money. Each time I put in money it simply said out of charging hours and rejected my money, eventually I figured there must be something wrong with the machine or that the meters had not actually become functional yet since the last time I went there there were no machines and so I left a note in the window saying the machine was not accepting money. I then got the 7.50ish train into london. I came back and had got a ticket and after contesting it I was told the machine was not faulty and that you can buy tickets after 8am. Nowhere on or around the machine did it say that you cannot buy tickets before 8am or anywhere along the bays. All the machines I have come across so far you can purchase tickets even outside the charging hours and this is what lead me to think there was something wrong with the machine. I was wondering do I have a case here?

So how are you supposed to park and catch the 7:50 train to London?

sorry I don't quite understand which point you were trying to make but assuming you were saying where are people supposed to park and get into london to work on time ie 9am, that was also my point, where was I supposed to park since hither green is a very busy station I assumed there was something wrong with the machine since lots of other people would have wanted to park there as well as me. Although there may have been other spaces which people who knew about the machines may have taken up since this was one of the very few spaces left which were not for residents, but again the only way people would have know that the machine works after 8am is after they get the pcnicon and then get informed it works after 8am if they challenged it

Sounds like it's free up until 8am, after which you must pay.

    What does the signage say?

Yes that was my point. I was empathising with you and not meaning, "so why didn't you park where you were supposed to"

    Sorry if I misled you.

lol yeah I did get quite confused as to which side you were taking. Well there are no posts saying which way the machine is so that too me a while to find since it was hidden in bushes, and on the machine is says the usual info being operating hours 8-6 or something to that effect but all the other machines that I have come across provided its not a sunday which it does not charge for anyway I have always been able to arrive before the charging hours and pay for a ticket which will start from when the charging hours comes into effect, nowhere does it say you cannot purchase a ticket outside of the operating hours...any ideas? I would understand if it has said you cannot buy tickets outside the hours but it does not and seeing as this is the first time I had come across such a machine I think it was rather logical of me to think it was the machine at fault

    I agree it's ridiculous.

Not quite sure if there is any particular legislation you can quote on the matter.
i think the rejection you mentioned would be enough to show they are being unreasonable. Was it in writing?

On signage - sounds to have potential if there is none.

ideally need to see all of the pcnicon and pics of location.
