Written by John Kruse, one of the leading experts on Bailiff Law, this consumer friendly guide is essential reading for anyone who comes into contact with a bailiff.
The book is easy to understand and clearly explains the rights
a bailiff has, and also what they cannot do when collecting debts and repossessing goods etc.
Anyone had a bad experience with the Revenue Protection Support Services squad? I've just been told to pay a £10 penalty or face ' further action'. This for a ticket issued to my 16 year old son who had the temerity to sit in a carridor doorway on a Gatwick to East Crodyon train on a friday morning in August. I manged to write back as follows.
I'm writing following your letter of the 23rd of September. Obviously I would have taken the opportunity to appeal the issuing of this ticket had I been given it, but unfortunately I wasn't. Not only that but I wasn't on any train on the 29th of August 2008.
My 16 year son was on a train travelling from Gatwick airport to East Croydon, having just returned alone from Canada. He perched in a corridor doorway outside a first class compartment - the train was predictably packed - when he was accosted by your 'Authorised Inspector' who was not only rude to him, but left him upset and confused. The incident would also appear to have confused your 'Authorised Inspector' as well as he/she seems to have managed to fill in his or her forms incorrectly. Not only does my name - not that of my son - apparently appear on the penalty notice, it is also misspelt. One wonders what else they managed to do incorrectly. One also wonders how or why or how any magistrate in the land would consider the issuing of such a botched penalty notice valid - particuarly so when it concerns a 16 year left in a sorry state and penniless having taken his last £10 by your employee. You must be very proud of your standards. I enclose a cheque for the £10 you have demanded to avoid your threats of ' further action'. In the meantime I'd like the opportunity to appeal this penalty. Would you please send me the relevant form and we'll see what can be done about this. I have copied this letter to your Director.
Disgusting. If you ring up and complain about a repeatedly late train, they should send you a tenner in train vouchers though. That would be the most effective way of getting your own back.
It seems to be the trend at the moment for any and all companies to try and claim extra money from people in whichever way they can.
This is truly disgusting.
Was he actually issued the ticket for standing in the corridoor? Or did they think that somebody who had just travelled from Canada might not be dressed appropriatly to be in sight of the 1st class passengers.
I am sure that they don't put enough carriages on a peak times so that they can issue these stupid penalties.
Let us know the outcome of your letter.

Thanks for the supportive replies. We'll see what happnes. Incidentally my son is dyspraxic and can get muddled at the best of times. Faced with the pompous berating inspector after a 12 hour flight he wasn't ever going to react well.
The national rail conditions of carraige state that you pay for carraige. Furthermore, was there a reason why he never bought a ticket before he boarded the train.
In other words you do not pay for a seat unless you reserve one. Im not having a go, because personally I agree with what you are saying, but just thought you should be aware.
20 Creditors including 1 CCJ with - you guessed it - Bryan Carter! £13467.43 owing. £2000 paid off in the past 12 months!!!
Actually I forgot to mention that, yes of course, he had with him an ordinary valid single ticket from Gatwick Aiport to East Croydon.
not sure where ciaomc2002 got the idea that your son didn't have a valid ticket. Hope they don't make you wait to long for a reply.

Added thought - my son is as honest as the day is long and has never travelled without the proper fare. What is such a shame about this is the sheer bloodymindedness of the Inspector. This was an exhausted, confused, vulnerable kid - a quiet word would have had him up and squashed elsewhere or even getting of the train early. Instead he is publicly told off, shouted at, humiliated and has his only money taken off him. Believe me I'd like to meet this Inspector. But Karma is what Karma does so we'll see.
Probably from the fact that she added the information to the forum AFTER I had posted. Understood.
Sorry, didn't mean to sound flippant. It was just that when I read the original post (not the bit added later), I didn't get the impression that he didn't have a ticket. I thought that the inspector didn't approve of him being in the corridoor.

I don't know why you ever thought he didn't have a ticket. It is quite apparent from the original post that he was fined for sitting in a corridor which may (in the opinion of the inspector) have been causing an unreasonable obstruction. If he didn't have a ticket I am sure the inspector would have been putting him off the train!
