Could anyone tell me what to do resolve an ongoing matter regarding council rent arrears with a former partner?

We split up 7 years ago, and after I moved a company called TNC collections chased me up on behalf of the council regarding rental arrears.

I've been making my payments regularly but they have been unable to trace my former partner. Though I have once discussed it on the phone I need to formalise it in writing that I am only liable for half the debt.

Can anyone clear this issue up for me and advise me as to what letter/correspondence I need to use and if it is true that I am only liable for half the debt as the original debt was 6k and I've nearly paid off my half down to about 3k.

Help soon please.

Thanks.

I was told my one of the staff at TNC collections over the phone! I unfortunately have never communicated to them in writing and neither did I make a note of the date/time/name of the individual I spoke to.

Indy Im in EXACTLY the same position as yourself, a joint council tax debit with my ex - who they cant trace, although I suspect that once they found me, they wont have done much to find him!

I know we are equally liable for the full amount, I believe the only way you can get your money back, is to take him to the small claims court for the other half. Easier said than done, I no longer have an address for my ex, and even if i did, he would "return to sender" saying that he didnt live there to keep avoiding it! I live in Scotland, and he lives somewhere in Leeds -so im just going to have to pay up, and face the fact I'll never get his half back.

Which I think is totally unfair!
