Default Help. £80 penalty for not notifying DVLA of a SORN when I did send the form in.

I sent a SORN notification to DVLA in April. Have received an £80 penalty notice today. When I rang them they told me that the original notification was never received, therefore I owe them £80. they also mentioned that they have sent a £40 notice a couple of months ago. Apparently I can appeal but there seems to be no information on appeals and what basis they wil consider appeals. I can provide witness statements to verify the car was off road and also a witness statement to the fact that the SORN was posted. Anyone got any ideas?

If you read some of the other posts here, you'll see you are not alone. DVLA are either extremely careless with their mail, or they are just conning the motorist for cash. Whether your car was off the road or not is irrelevant, they are only interested in the paper trail, and if they can intimidate you into paying up. Call their bluff. State your case in writing, keep copies, and send it recorded delivery. I would srongly advise anyone to SORN on line via the DVLA website, and store the Email acknowledgement.

...and write to your MP. Mine sorted this out for me at the time they tried the same trick.

Also, if enough people do this, we might actually find an MP who remembers that he works for us and actually do something about the legalised con that is the DVLA.

I'm getting my MP involved with regards to my issue (VED issued incorrectly, but my fault for not letting them know they issued it incorrectly!!) he's asked for all the case numbers so he can contact them......

I've got my local MP chasing my DVLA issue now, so it may be worth while asking yours to look in to your issue
